Brass eye was brilliant.

I think the outrage is not over the fact that he used to be Manuel on Fawlty . . but over the fact they are sending such messages to a 74year old ..

there are norms . / standards .. some things you just dont do . .

Yes, again it is rude and stupid but as bad as the papers are whipping it up to be? People wouldn't care if it was a random 74 year old and it isn't like he is a drooling mess. When you see him he is very alert and active. The papers are enjoying being able to whip people into a fist waving frenzy because they know that will sell more papers. Mark my words..give it a couple weeks and the exact same papers will be finding a reason to publicly call the granddaughter a slut. After all, they do that every day to other women and don't appear to care about their grandfathers.

I agree that there are standards and norms and in my world that includes not calling for censorship on things you didn't actually see, read or watch. It is like that episode of Father Ted where they have to protest against a film they never saw 'down with that!'

Yeah, what the heck is with that? How on earth did that show get promoted to prime time BBC1? I hate that show, but it never bothered me when it was on BBC2 on a Sunday afternoon, but now it's up there, in your face with spin-off programmes everywhere

Anyways, stand up and be counted...

Anybody with a glimmer of a genuine sense of humour would instantly recognise what was going on and drop the ridiculous moral indignation and just get on with their lives. Over the centuries some of the funniest and most fondly revered humour has sprung from extremely close to the knuckle material. Moreover if you live a public life, as the entire Sachs family seem to do then you have to be prepared for people to comment or talk about you without your control... and she is no angel!!!!

buzzy 10-30-2008 12:27 AM

I shat myself laughing when Russel was asked about his bad press in the Daily Mail, and then he said something along the lines of "Lets not forget, the daily mail supported hitler" haha.

The funny thing is, Brand did actually sleep with his grand daughter. lmao

Why is it any worse because he is nearly 80? Surely rude is rude? What it wouldn't be so offensive if he was 50? If the grand daugher had been an actual child then fair enough but she is a grown up and I am fairly sure her grandfather had guessed she was having sex by now.

The real 'crime' is that it wasn't even funny.

if you can't see it's worse being obscene to an 80 year old than a younger person then you don't know many 80 year olds (or they don't teach respect for your elders in the US). they come from a different generation, add to that they were talking about his grand daughter, it's out of order.

as a main character in fawlty towers, one of the funniest british sitcoms ever, he has a place in a lot of peoples hearts, and they picked on the wrong person. manuel will be remembered long after that twat brand, although ross is ok.

I think you are not listening. Yes, we get it was rude and over the mark but the reaction is FAR FAR too much. And he isn't 80..even if you round off his age he isn't 80. Heck, somebody his age is running for president in the USA. I enjoyed him in Fawlty Towers, though I bet some Spanish people were offended by his portrayal of them. It doesn't mean the two comedians need to be circled by the lynch mob.

Don't you see anything not right with calling for censorship on things you (general you) didn't actually see or hear yourself?

he's 78 which is nearer 80 than 75. and yes someone that age is running for president in the US, but then they voted for idiots like bush and reagan, so they'll obviouslly vote for anyone.

i doubt many spanish were offended by manuel, he wasn't making fun of the spanish, he just happened to be a thick spaniard who struggled with english.

the fact as to whether people heard what was said when it was originally broadcast is irrelevant, once they found out what was said they're entitled to an opinion. it's hardly censorship, as what has been said has been broadcast.

i agree the reaction is ridicuosly over the top though.

Exactly. It isn't that there was a reaction at all but the insane level of reaction.

I wonder what Ross's contract is like and how much of that money he will get anyway if the hysterical lynch mob gets their way and he is sacked. He will then spend a month in the 'darkness' before being signed to a huge contract by one of the other networks.

I posted about boycotting Strictly because apparently complaining about something you didn't see or hear works. I just checked and the moderator didn't let my comment get through.

That's probably why it's been getting so much airtime - pleasant distraction from the economy lol

Those beeb moderators are such prunes.

testpie 10-30-2008 02:03 PM

It's entirely stupid, but unfortunately the UK's tabloid press loves this shit, because it's much easier for people to be easily angered by it regardless of their level of intelligence; you can't sell papers based on an economic crisis when the reader base is too retarded to understand anything more complex than 1+1=Window.

lol..apparently the name Sarah Jayne is too risky for them :)

I guess they didn't want Strictly to be at risk. Imagine if Ross was lined up to be on that stupid show as a dancer. They would have to make a serious choice.

You know, on Comic Relief Ross does a huge portion of that show and the promo work for it. Think of all the kids that will starve if he is fired and can't do all that charity work on the beeb. It will just mean more Graham Norton probably.

Michaelious 10-30-2008 02:28 PM

I sincerely hope not. Someone joked to me today that this Friday might see "Friday night with Graham Norton" - I'd like to call it more of a Halloween prank than a joke.

I don't think I'm alone in saying that most things with "Norton" in are shit - Graham Norton, Norton Antivirus...

Next to Ross I bet their biggest light entertainment contract is Norton. They paid to get his show over to the BBC and they are using him every chance they get. You know it is going to be Graham Norton and the Piano Puffs.

Was it a dildo or some other sex toy with him slapping out the same old "Ohh? What could this be?" faux-innocence routine that he so heavily relies on?

she died in paris which is in france. anyway the paparazzi is what made her, and she used them as much as they used her. she died because she didn't wear a seatbelt and the car was speeding.

Yeah the tabloid game is played on both sides. If you are going to lie by them then it isn't much of a shock to die by them literally or figuratively.
