But when a small child is being attacked, it's kind of a moot point what is wrong with the attacker. He needs to be disabled immediately.

Anyone with kids understands the impulse to protect and if someone kicks your kid in front of you, oh well... Maybe the caregiver should be paying better attention. A knock out shot to the head was a little overkill for sure.

We had a similar situation with an extreme ADD teen that grabbed a magazine from my wife while we were at Borders drinking coffees. Without thinking or looking I shoved him over the magazine rack. It was pure instinct what can I say. I felt bad afterwards but sometimes you act first and think later. I would have felt a lot worse later not reacting and dealing with injuries to my wife or myself after the fact.
