The "socialist" label that Sen. John McCain and his GOP presidential running mate Sarah Palin are trying to attach to Sen. Barack Obama actually has long and very ugly historical roots.

J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI from 1924 to 1972, used the term liberally to describe African Americans who spent their lives fighting for equality.

Those freedom fighters included the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who led the Civil Rights Movement; W.E.B. Du Bois, who in 1909 helped found the NAACP which is still the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization; Paul Robeson, a famous singer, actor and political activist who in the 1930s became involved in national and international movements for better labor relations, peace and racial justice; and A. Philip Randolph, who founded and was the longtime head of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and a leading advocate for civil rights for African Americans.

McCain and Palin have simply reached back in history to use an old code word for black. It set whites apart from those deemed unAmerican and those who could not be trusted during the communism scare.

Shame on McCain and Palin.

Where did all this socialism talk come from anyway? Obama's tax plan is hardly socialism, it's a 2% increase in taxes on money earned over $250K.

I'm never for increasing taxes but GW Bush went to war and cut taxes at the same time which is nearly unheard of. So you have a trillion dollar war, a trillion dollar bailout, a half a trillion dollar stimulus package all in the last year. Um, somebody has to pay for it.

Socialism meant "Canada" to me. I grew up in the South, very right/Christian/republican and have never heard socialism tied to blacks.

Maybe the few (not raciest) but stupid people that think all blacks are on welfare. Normally those are the rich Americans that haven't seen anything other than the back of a drivers head.

A government being socialist and private organizations being socialists are two different things.

Do you believe a socialist government is good? And if you do, how many times in your life have you voluntarily paid more taxes to the federal government than they said you needed to?

I don't believe a socialist government is good. I also don't believe a pure hands-off laissez faire government is good. I don't believe either candidate does either and both fall somewhere in the middle.

A mix has been the most successful, similar to what we have now. My complaint is with those who call Obama a socialist while not looking themselves in the mirror. We are all socialists and rely on it to survive. We all enjoy being able to dial 911 and have a cop show up at our door. We enjoy having trained firefighters put out a blaze that may erupt. We enjoy having a military to protect our borders.

Both sides have socialist leanings. It's just a matter what they choose to socialize through the government.

You are full of shit

Most blacks are on welfare.. Go look at your local stores etc and count how many are black, you will see very few that actually work somewhere. Unless the government has some hidden rooms that employ thousands of them somewhere or the sports industry helps that many of them out.
