Up here in Canada we use a pencil to mark an 'X' in the circle beside our choices name and slip the folded paper ballot into a sealed box; Not much room for mistakes or misunderstandings. At the close of the polls, members of the respective parties count the ballots by hand and the results are known within hours. No need for hanging chads or screwed up software; just a pencil and a paper ballot.

The problem isn't that its' not paper, they do print out paper receipts....
it's that the code is secure, no one's allowed to review it. No one's allowed to double check the systems, no one's allowed to watch the process in action. No one's allowed to verify that everything's ok before, during or after.

That's just wrong. If it's supposed to be so important, there'd be 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th measures taken to ensure it's right.

We do that in the UK and their are drawbacks. You do get spoiled slips where people have ticked their choice or signed the ballot paper. If you mark the paper with anything other than an x next to your candidates name, they simply dont count the vote. With machines that doesnt happen, but you get all this bollocks, so I guess your still better off with a pencil and paper.
