I remember reading something that they are not updating it anymore due to it not being able to work with new versions of wordpress? Is this true?

I don't think it was a scam. At least, not now that that asshole edgeprod is out of the way. Programmers are just as flakey as some designers are. It's probably hard for Chio to find a good reliable one to take over the project.
