I've noticed mainstream CTR is on a slow decline lately, it is getting harder

one point I will make is that content is the reverse king, the better your content, the lower the CTR

There is some substance in that statement, I guess adsense has been taken over by automatically generated content sites.

Just pick up some nice MFA template and hide your content, lol. Honestly it depends, if you are making doorway like pages for search engines do that. If you have actual site, where you want to keep surfers happy, its different thing.
I have as high as 30%-50 CTR with se traffic on some simple MFA templates.

Indeed, there are dozens of factors that affect CTR's with layouts playing only one part. I have a few sites that do over 100% CTR, and many above 50.

Your sites theme/niche and how relevant the served ads are play a huge role, as is your site's content and your ability to give the surfer a little of what he's looking for...but not too much.

All of googles rules about ad placement and colors and not putting images above them don't help either

Make a warez site and use a double iframe to link to your legit site which has adsense banners on top. Then tell your warez surfers to click them to get access to free movies, xxx & games.

Redirect the page to piratebay within 15-20 seconds and set cookies so they can never see the page adsense again.

It's a mainstream tube site with no stolen content, some 6K uniques daily right now and the CRT is like 0,20%

Ads are sparce and well placed IMO, the relevance is pretty good as well.
