Hard drives... how hot is too hot? At one host a drive is 50C!
I noticed recently that the HD temperature reported by SMART on one of my servers is looking kinda high. There are two identical drives in the server and over the past 24h the temp of each has ranged from 45-50C. A few months ago the drive temps were at 40C, which makes me wonder whether it's a data centre cooling issue.
If I'm reading the SMART values right the "maximum" temp threshhold is set to trip above 55C, so it's not far off. At another host a similar set of drives (same brand and capacity) is currently 32C. Thoughts? |

50C is not that hot.
Most equipment is tested to work at 50C ambient

If it's fine then why is the SMART "failure" threshold set to 55C?

does not mean your host has heating issues could be a fan motor has died, have your service provider check out the server.

It *is* a D/C cooling issue. Good because my server doesn't have to be taken offline to check fans, bad because in the long run this may have shortened the useful life of some of the components in it.....
