Nikon D100, or Canon D60?

I am eyeing a new camera. One of my (many) dark secrets is that my photography is produced on a 2 megapixel camera. It's a nice camera, and obviously the results are good, but I am eyeing something younger and sexier.

So, does anyone have opinions on the Nikon D100 versus the Canon D60? The reviews I have seen put them very close, with the Canon ever so slightly edging out the Nikon in terms of features I like. I can find the Nikon for cheaper, and have heard more nice things about it. So I'm torn.

Nikon D100 or Canon D60?

I'm a die hard Nikon fan myself. I'd go with Nikon. I currently use a Sony F707 5megapixel. I love it and I also recommend it.

I am looking for an SLR style. The sony seems a bit more like a beefy standard digital. We were a Canon family, Dad had an FT-B and I had an AE-1... still do, somewhere.

you can't go wrong with either camera, but if you can get the nikon for cheaper go with the nikon. I recently bought a leica digilux1, it's got all the manual funtions of a SLR, but the only bad thing is that it's got limited lens attachments.
<a href="http://webizca.com/digilux1/" target="_blank">here some test pics</a>

I have started to agree.. neither camera seems to have any problems. The one thing I will miss is Olympus's live preview. Digital SLRs don't have it, except Olympus. So its just a matter of hearing feedback from people who use either.

This site has great reviews and sample pics of all the pro cameras on the market. They update all the time.

Digital Photography Review at http://www.dpreview.com

You might want to look at the soon to be on the market Sigma SD9 which uses the Fovean chip. The sample pics will blow your mind. Its pricing is the same as the D100. The Nikon and the Canon you mentioned are both top of the line and I'm sure neither will disappoint. I've always been a Nikon fan myself and would go with the D100.

I got mine down the street from you at Mel Pierce just east of the 101 on ramp. I get most of my suppplies from Freestyle, (on Sunset... filters, used lighting equip, dark room supplies for before I went digital)

That F5 is one bad ass camera. Like I said, I'm looking to pick up a longer lens like a 300 or longer, and a faster lens like a 28. I just love goofy, bright colored, wide angle shots.

I am looking at the same choice at the moment. If you have any lenses from one or the other brand that may help with the decision, I have Nikon so will probably go that way.

I am waiting to see the Sigma though - the new chip looks pretty good, but the downside will be having to use Sigma lenses.

I dont think you can go wrong with either camera.

You could always hang out for the EOS-1Ds - nice camera if you can afford the US$8000 or so it will cost.

I am huge on brands. I like to know the brand I am using... and I'm not very familiar with Sigma. There's something reassuring about buying a Nikon or a Canon, you know?

I guess its nice to be torn... Two good cameras, equally reasonable, with nothing major wrong with them. Since I definitely can't afford the higher-end cameras, I think I will concentrate on these two... Unless there's some magical camera out there better than both and in the same price range. ;)

I am with you on the brand thing - but the chip that is going into the Sigma is really worth a look from the samples I have seen.

It probably an overkill for web porn, but if you are interested in other forms of photography as well, it seems an interesting concept.

Basically, they are going for 3 CCD sensors rather than one, so they can record more colour depth as for each pixel position each colour can be on or off.

Its an interesting concept and it will be great to see the results once the camera comes out.

I imagine I will end up getting the Nikon though.

A friend of mine, another professional photographer, says the Nikon D100 is better than the Nikon D1X, which is a good camera. So unless you have some Cannon lenses go with the Nikon. but I would advise you to buy a pro lens if you are going to have a wide angle lens.

The cheap ones are crap and no matter how good your camera is the lens you shoot through determines a lot.

The reviews of the Canon D60 and the Nikon D100 both suggest that they are comparable to the D1X, and in some cases better. Certainly makes them tempting, and hard to see why to shell out the extra. Still not clear which one is the better choice, though.

It all comes down to personal taste, or experience.

If u are from a Canon family go for the D60 or if you have owned either brand before go for the brand you have owned.

Right about now, those two cameras are just great!

If it was up to me I would go for the D100 cuz I use Nikon 35mm so I have all the lenses, flashes, etc.. so it makes no sense to buy a complete new collection of things.

I gotta say though -although Im all Nikon- the results I have seen from Canon's digital cameras are outstanding.

If you want to venture off, try Sigma's new digital camera SD9 or something like that that uses the Feveon chip and it gets the best -by far- images out there right now.

Good Luck and to be honest you can't really go wrong....

The reviews I read agree with what people are saying. I guess I posted here to see if anyone thought the reviews are nuts, or had a horror story or disappointment with one of the cameras. Nice to hear people think they are pretty much great.

Any opinions on the Sigma, or the Fuji S2 Pro? The four cameras seem to make up a product arena. All of them seem nice, and are the area I (and many others) are looking for. Wonder what the advantages of each are...

If you are considering a new high end digital camera like these two then why not buy the newest Canon instead? I think it is about twice the resolution as either of these.

We're going to buy Nikon D100 this month. Is Nikkor 17-35 2.8 AF lens good for it?

Money. I want a camera that is very good, but I have a budget. Plus, since I shoot for the web, I know there is a point where more camera quality isn't going to make a huge difference. From what I have heard of these four cameras, there isn't a lot of reason for me to go bigger.

That is what I thought...Untill I was shooting the shit with another content company in LA last week and they mentioned the value of higher end images for broadband uses as well as print work and or banners for trade shows and so forth. I have always shot in the higher modes for this reason and then scaled it down for my sales but knowing the direction that the web is going...It makes sense to stick with that train of thought. You never know when you might want to grab some old images and do something different with them.

Either way...If I were choosing wetween the two mentioned above, I would go with the Canon. I LOVE Nikon but I personally prefer the D60. I actually ordered the D60 not too long ago then cancelled the order when I found out the new Canon was coming out.

The reviews I looked at (on dpreview.com) left me leaning towards the Canon. The Nikon seem to take very soft pictures, which basically means less effective resolution to me. However, I got the impression that the Nikon was still more popular (like in this poll). Hmm.

I think the Fuji competes better with the Canon, personally... And the Sigma is certainly very promising. Unfortunately, I can't get an in-depth review by the same people yet, for comparison.

I can get the Nikon for around $1300, or the rest for around $1600... Right now, I tend to think the Nikon is a bit soft, but then again, it seems to come highly recommended. Just working out my decision process in public, since I'm bored.

I shoot with a Nikon D1X. I could not live without it. It is by far the best camera I have ever used. I don't think I could do my job with anything lesser. That thing can focus, hit, buffer, and dump in fractions of a second. And it looks amazing.

The only downside is that it's heavy as shit. That and it's hard to sneak into places.

And that's why VirtuContent is the best content out there.

Buy it.

Even better than the new Canon coming out is the Kodak coming out 14+MP and for less than 1/2 the price of the canon.

Go with the Canon D60, if you can afford it, the EOS1D is even better, but quite a bit more expensive.

I should say, I've been shooting with Canon for about 25 years...and I have never been disappointed. I also shoot my video with Canon.

In point of fact, any of the higher end Canons and Nikons are comparable, but, and this is very important with digital cameras, the Canon L series lenses have the edge over Nkion. Take a look at photojournalism and sports photography. Ever notice on the sidelines of games all those big white lenses...they are canon. If you look closely, you will see they completely dominate that type of photography.

Nikon is a distant second.

Now, you may say that a studio shoot isn't a sports shoot, and in some ways that's correct. But, with a model, you're not shooting a couple of headshots or a portrait. I assume you are shooting hundreds of shots at at time, so in that sense, as you're trying to maximize they shoot, it is very similar to photojournalism or sports photography.

By the way, the one selling point about the Canon EOS 1D that really makes it worth the extra money for me is there is absolutely NO digital lag. It reacts more like a 36mm (albeit really heavy one) SLR than any digital camera I have ever used.

Go Canon.

Almost bought a D60 tonight, but nobody local will price-match the Internet. Let's see... £2000, or $1700? Hmmmm....

Having shot with a 1D myself I will admit the speed is great (sometimes to good, at least a slower camera slows you down and makes you think about what you are shooting) but it is only 4MP versus the D60's 6MP, so if you are shooting purely for the web it is fine, but if you want to do something in print, the more pixels the better.

Also, photo sizes for the web are creeping up, I am already putting all my new content out at 1600x1200, which from a 4MP camera is only roughly a 25% reduction, so if you are looking for a camera to last a few years, that isnt alot of headroom.

I just got the Nikon 5700 5 Megapixel Camera. Here it is and it's less than $1000 on Ebay. This camera is the best I have ever shot with and it has got very good reviews.

I thought I would go SLR, rather than pseudo-SLR, since I currently use an SLR-style that doesn't use real interchangable lenses, etc...

Heh. Just had a thought... The "credit card" sale was a lot of fun. Maybe a "buy me a Canon EOS D60" sale is in order... Could be fun. Got a few fewer sets now, of course, but the camera is a lot less than that credit card bill. ;)

My personal opinion, I love Canon and if you plan to buy the camera only for web site content shooting or 5x7 inch printing. Secondhand D30 is also a good choice.
