anyone else think NIN is way overrated?

I think a cool logo and being around at the right time (and maybe a cool video and song or two) has gone a long way, but NIN and Reznor are not deserving of the super-status that they seem to have....

I like some of their stuff but never really got into the hype. I prefer Manson any day of the week... even though from what I understand they are good friends.

old stuff is good. New stuff they arent concentrating on it as much. A good example is the slip. They just slipped that thing onto the net. Didnt put too much time into it.

Not overrated at all.

His new shit kind of blows, but everything from pretty hate machine, broken, to the downward spiral was great stuff and highly innovative. It was industrial that was actually accessible to the masses.

He almost completely lost me after the perfect drug. Since then good songs are rare.

Manson wouldn't be shit without Trent Reznor. Trent gave them a record deal and produced their first album. Reznor thanks Brian Warner in the liner notes of the EP Broken, and Manson appears in the video for "Gave up" (sans "scary goth" makeup), in which he plays guitar and sings back-up.

Reznor produced and released Manson's Antichrist Superstar album. Manson then went on to have an overflated ego, and totally ditched Trent, which resulted in the NIN song "Starfuckers, Inc.," which is entirely about Manson. They patched things up before the video for "Starfuckers, Inc." was released, which is why Manson appears in the video with Trent (kinda makes the song lose its impact, if you ask me). I'd post the video for "Starfuckers," but its renamed "Starsuckers" to suit MTV and I think that sucks...lol.

Anyway, Trent is, and always has been an experimental artist. Some get it, some don't. It honestly took me a few years before I began to appreciate the genius of Pretty Hate Machine, Broken and the Downward Spiral. The Fragile has some choice cuts on it, as well.

And I think most on here would appreciate the fact they he said "Fuck you" to MTV about performing "The Hand That Feeds" on either their music or movie awards show because they wouldn't let him hang a picture of G.W. Bush behind the band ("what if this whole crusade's a charade / and behind it all there's a price to be paid / for the blood on which we dine / justified in the name of the holy and the divine").

I admit to having lost interest in some of NIN's newer stuff, but that's mainly because he's creating and experimenting in styles that don't appeal enough to me. Overrated? No way. If anything, I would make the argument that he's underrated, because I bet half of the nine inch nails fanboys and groupies that sport their NIN t-shirts when a new single comes out don't truly understand or appreciate the brilliant mind of Trent Reznor.

Not over rated whats so ever.

Newer stuff maybe not so good but there are some that are worth picking through. NIN has made more popular songs than most bands.

And NIN working up Mansion is well within the tradition of rock and roll. How many people these days work up another band? Not many.

Completely agreed. I also think pretty similarly about Tool, earlier stuff was amazing. Most of Maynard's better stuff in the past 7 or 8 years has been through APC.

I mean, just as a small example, some of the people that were involved in these bands might have something to say about that?:

and industrial sure doesn't begin and end with nin by any measure, there is tons of industrial music out there that I would rather listen to than nine inch nails..... don't get me wrong, I remember when head like a hole first came out and thinking it was greatness... I just think that nin is just one of many bands in the industrial genre

Most people i know don't know them so I guess they're not over rated. However, they got a certain notoriety in the geek community because they are very open about new content distribution platforms such as bitorrent and the open source model applied to music... Reznor got his official ThePirateBay.org account

Because of the crossover appeal of Pretty Hate Machine you have to give him his credit. He's had a few good cuts over the years though since then. The drum break during Perfect Drug is still one of my favorite parts of any song.

You're keeping in step, in the line.
Got your chin held high and you feel just fine
'Cause you do what you're told
But inside your heart, it is black
And it's hollow and it's cold

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you wanna change it?

What if this whole crusade's a charade
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood which we dine
Justified in the name
Of the Holy and the Divine

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you wanna change it?

So naïve
I keep holding on to what I wanna believe
I can see
But I keep holding on and on and on and on

(Repeat x8)
Will you bite the hand that feeds you?
Will you stay down on your knees?

He was like the Kurt Cobain for this style of music which already had a limited audience ... great lyricist / poet / artist ...

In 100 years ( if we're still here probably not ) I think you would hear about Trent Reznor before you heard about Linkin Park. When you do some of the songs he did it's real hard to "out do" yourself. Most of what I hear today on the "alternative" radio... if that's even a term anymore is Fluff

If you think he's overrated you're not listening

Why does everything have to be rated anyway ... music today is overrated

I dont really care for industrial, never been my thing and NIN is certainly no exception. I wholeheartedly agree with the previous statements regarding rich and famous people making angry and depressed music, nothing annoys me more than hearing some pretentious crybaby rock star belly ache about stuff when you know that he makes absurd amounts of money, has throngs of women throwing themselves at them and most people hre encounters on a day to day basis kisses his ass. I can think of a lot worse ways to live.

Anyone who thinks NIN / Reznor is over rated is ignorant to music. I'm not saying "omg you suck because you hate this band". I'm literally saying you're ignorant when it comes to music. Maybe you simply listen to what you like, and don't really stretch your interpretations of music outside your own little theater of pleasure. But it goes without saying, anyone who knows anything about music understands and knows Trent Reznor. Wether you have a major in music, just have extensive knowledge, or are in the business.

Seriously, if you just want to listen to whatever music you enjoy. Then so be it. Turn on your radio, or flip on some music television. But for the love of god, don't go around acting like your little shit opinion matters. It simply puts your ignorance of the subject on display. I'm not the biggest fan of classical music. But that doesn't mean I'm going to go around and say "Who else thinks Beethoven was over rated?".

There is a reason the first course you have to take in college for music is "Music Appreciation".

There is a reason the first course you have to take in college for music is "Music Appreciation".

from what I see, people that love industrial music really don't listen to Nine Inch Nails...

and wtf, how does someone mention Linkin Park in this thread

all bands that so-called "invented" the genre more than that some are trying to credit to Reznor

when people were squealing like pigs to get a free copy of downward spiral before it came out in Hollywood clubs( not a self respecting "standard" citizen would visit) he wasn't ... even after pretty hate machine.

YOU made it popular. Everyone had to get their pussy pierced finally and listen to the harder music around that time ... it finally appealed to the masses, is that his fault ?

Where the fuck are the addicts ?
What is your top ten of music that matters now. I would like to know help

Sweet history.....Too Dark Park, headhunter, and KmfdM is doing it again.....

Although I was a sucker for VNV nation afterwards... goth girls always soo yummy.

Pretty Hate Machine its still the best album ever *pending you aren't under 30*

My buddy had backstage passes for them in Toronto *Queens opened* so I tagged along for child hood dreams sake... sneaky turn of events buddy was packing a pound of shrooms for Queens and I took a little bit... *ok maybe more*

First during the queens of the stone press conference... I came to the conclusion that Troy is a Meth Head... but apparently very loudly. In the press conference. LOL bad idea for them since it turned out he was.. so got booted onto their tour bus where I was fed jaeger and drugs.. then somewhere in there I started to rant about trent being a scientologist *he booked 1 of 2 nights in the year where this particular venue was booze free* So the tour guys thought it would be funny to put me backstage again. *I was a little messed up at this point*

During Trent's gig... I started to scream Tom Cruise on Steroids... and other retarded things... the press loved me. Gave the backstage pass to a 17yr old goth kid who thought I was joking... sweating and ranting I told her scientology is not for me. And stormed back onto the tour bus...

Pretty much last thing I remember... not hard to imagine I woke up in jail asking my wife to close the patio door I am freezing.. Surprise!!!!!

I am sure the only moral of this story is the new NIN sucks. And a roided out sober Trent Reznor is lame.
