The exorcist!

Peaches 10-13-2008 12:48 PM

Poltergeist. I just KNEW the house we were living in at the time was built on a burial ground!

I read the Exorcist (without parental knowledge) when I was in the 8th or 9th grade - the only book that has ever kept me up at night afraid of the boogeyman.

mvee 10-13-2008 12:53 PM

As a jaded adult it is pretty hard to scare me. Creepy sure.. Hold me interest with tension perhaps, but scare no. Night of the Living Dead did a good job on me when i was 10

A movie that is not a horror yet one of the most intense movies I've ever seen is "Manhunter" (1986) from Michael Mann.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091474/

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi.../Manhunter.jpg

Although "Silence of the lambs" had excellent acting and more of a typical thriller / adventure plot structure, Manhunter is WAY more intense in my book and William Petersen in the title role is just excellent.

"Apocalypse now" would be another movie that's actually pretty intense, scary and philosophical at the same time, one of those I enjoyed in its full length director's cut and being slightly older.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078788/

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...px-Apocnow.jpg

Then there's another very atmospherical and intense movie that comes to my mind and might not be entirely this well known - Angel Heart (1987) with Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092563/

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ngel_Heart.jpg

Uncovering anything that might be a part of our neighbourhood or even a part of us and is proven to happen regularly is actually rather more scary to me than any of the mysterious or fiction horrors.

Let me mention William Styron and his Sophie's Choice, I have to admit I've never seen the original movie, but am a huge admirer of the author and these are the horrors that were and are living with us.

John Carpenter's The Thing still freaks me out. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is still scary as hell.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 10-13-2008 06:10 PM

I have dreams that are betteer than any Horror film out there.

I should write a book.

Yentl.

To this day, I have nightmares about seeing it.

J. Falcon 10-13-2008 06:20 PM

I just saw House of 1000 Corpses the other night, pretty frightening.

Ayla_SquareTurtle 10-13-2008 06:36 PM

None. Absolutely none. I used to be scared by even the dumbest scary movies when I was a kid and refused to sleep in my own bed after watching Nightmare on Elm Street, but at some point, it all just went away. A loud boom might make me jump if I'm not expecting it, and I don't watch slashers because I get sick at my stomach with the blood and guts stuff, but as far as being scared, it just doesn't happen.

Fuck that. You think the youth of today reads? Write it in a brief story...perhaps even a rough script, then either film the fucker yourself, pitch it to a studio, or find an independent filmmaker to shoot the bitch. You'll reach a broader market that way rather than trying to get people to read a book.

That and Devils Rejects are great :thumbsup

You can really see Rob Zombies skills coming together in Halloween.

The Entity freaked me out when I first saw it.

Another minor one for me is "Trilogy of Terror". Remember the little Zuni doll?

He who kills...

It's a little disturbing even now.

My staff knows I fucking HATE zombies, they all dressed up as zombies last year for halloween to freak me out. I should post pics, it was pretty funny! :1orglaugh

bronco67 10-13-2008 07:22 PM

the last 20 minutes of that movie is absolutely twisted.

jollyperv 10-13-2008 07:27 PM

Poltergeist still gets me if I'm watching it alone at night...such a great movie with amazing special effects and a soundtrack that is just fucking incredible.

qxm 10-13-2008 07:54 PM

My definition of horror involves more of a "chilling story" and less gore (silent hill is an exception) .... I don't really get why people vote for "the bride of Frankenstein" or "Jaws" or "King Kong" as horror movies (not kidding see this > http://www.imdb.com/chart/horror ) .. honestly I could laugh through those movies and end up disappointed.

U know a good horror story was indeed "good" if you ..at some point.. after watching the movie feel frightened when turning the lights off and such...

Also, horror movies that involve serial killers do nothing for me either... flesh and blood you can kill and effectively fight against..... demons and spirits is a totally different story, this last one is a lot heavier on people's minds ....

Horror movies that are based on true stories are also a big plus ... as far as my preferences...

Now Without further ado....my list:

Silent Hill
<< One of the best Horror movies evur (Turn the lights and grab something to pee on...use diaper if needed...lol)

Death of a Ghost Hunter >> Freaky Religious movie

Unholy Women << Human Spirits are not as frightening as demons

Dark Water >> Jap Version is a lot better (and scarier) than the American remake.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose >> Pretty good :)

The Blair Witch Project << take it for what it is... a really good amateurish "movie"

Trilogy of Terror >> Honoring the freaky lil warrior on my sig (zuni fetish warrior that is)

Bless the Child << Entertaining cute lil horror movie

The Ring/Ringu/Grudge >> Decent J-Horror

An American Haunting << Niiice :)

The Exorcist/Omen/Freddy Krueger/Hellraiser >> Were scary back when I had 8-13 years of age ....

Constantine << Fun to watch... not really scary.....

Sleepy Hollow >> Pretty Funny :)

The Eye << Japanese Version .... the American remake is not scary :(

.......I know for a fact that there are 3-5 good horror movies that I am forgetting about....these are the ones I remember off the top of my head ...

bausch 10-13-2008 08:32 PM

Honestly, no movie scares me. Watching people eat shit doesn't scare me either. Nothing scares me except if it affects me personally, then I'm scared, but I can watch people getting their heads chopped off or having their guts eaten while alive by zombies or having their eyeballs squeezed out until they pop by a monster etc. It doesn't scare me. If I had to get a shot at the dr's I would be scared but I can watch other people get bloodied and cut up. I am only scared for myself and my own pain. I don't get scared if others are, I just dont care.

LeRoy 10-13-2008 09:02 PM

Jaws is still scary :(

Agreed....... thats why I think that Gore != Horror ..... and Gore .. is not scary at all.....

Yea... and when there is a sad part in a movie like if someone is dying or if someone is in pain etc just a part where most people seem to sympathize for the character or others even start crying, for some reason I just laugh out loud... It's an inappropriate response but I can't help it, I always find it funny for some reason. I hope it doesn't mean I'm a psycho...

I also don't understand why people are afraid of ghost movies. I don't believe in ghost. I believe I could be shot by someone or robbed and stabbed to death; I am afraid of things that could possibly happen in real life, who the fuck is scared of ghosts? I really don't get it.

Exorcist movie is not scary. It's funny and lame. What is so scary about someone who is possessed and whose head spins around? Maybe it's scary if you are 6 years old but anyone over the age of 13 is weird if that scares them.

And who the hell is scared of zombies? Everyone knows that's fake.

I am not scared of horror movies. I am scared of getting in a car accident when I go on the fwy and burning to death or drying in a gruesome accident. I'm scared of being robbed and murdered.

Horror movies don't scare me at all.

shermo 10-14-2008 12:29 AM

It's not a horror film, but Requiem for a Dream sufficiently creeped me out.

Trend 10-14-2008 12:58 AM

Burnt Offerings / The Exorcist still freak me out and oddly enough .. Pet Cemetery

Marcus Aurelius 10-14-2008 01:30 AM

Salem's lot still creeps me out. The dead kid floating at his brothers window trying to get him to open it...scary.

If were talking about a single scene however the scene that sticks with me as horrendous out of any movie and this one isn't even a horror flick is the rape/murder scene from "dead man walking" with Sean Penn. Where the old guy is raping the girl while her boyfriend is forced to watch, then he just takes out a fucking pocket knife and starts stabbing her stomach, and they shoot the boyfriend in the head after he watches her die.
