Also see the Milgram experiment if you're interested in this topic. This is the one with the shock machine and the scientists who keeps ordering the test subject to shock the question answerer on the other side of the wall with ridiculous amounts of voltage.

People tend to follow the mass, and it's a natural reaction, nothing special.
