New Metallica...

is actually pretty fucking good

I picked it up the other day and aside from a clunky rambling instrumental, I was loving it. It's a bit of a throwback to Master Of Puppets...James sounds the best he's sounded in YEARS...Welcome back Metallica!

I didn't like it at first. Then I fell in love with all nightmare long.

I let me play on repeat all saturday and it grows on you! Normally when it takes an album longer to grow on you the more playability is has.

I think after a few more listens i will *GET IT* and give it a better review!

Im gonna say it, I know others will not agree. I hope this pisses some of you off the way it pisses me off ... Metallica can suck it! This comes from a one time fan, back in no life - garage days, to kill em all - master of ..., but after the black album, napster - lars in general - they can just suck it ... they are iconic, a household name, and they are mainstream. Metal is gritty, dirty, and pure ... Metallica can take their pro-tools shit, and stick it. Music without heart.

Look its just an opinion, i know some of you cant tell the difference anyway.

I left the Metallica fanclub at one point as well...and I remember being an active tape trader waaaay back in the Kill 'em All days...god damn, I'm old...but this is a great return to form. There's also something that was missing from the last couple Metallica albums...audible bass guitar! holy shit, who woulda thought, hehe

I still think Lars is a pompous douchebag, but I'm glad he left his fucking snare drum home for most of Death Magnetic....

Listen to Death Magnetic and Master of Puppets back to back... You will see that Death Magnetic is weak compared to MoP, and while I do like some of the songs on Death Magnetic (the best since Black album), it's just nowhere near MoP or In Justice for All.

Definitely
I can imagine it would be hard to top MoP or Kill em All (I wasn't totally crazy about Ride The Lightning, liked it, didn't love it)...it would be like SLAYER trying to top Reign In Blood...nearly impossible...

I agree. Death Magnetic finally gives us some good speed, and some true metal, but it feels like the "new Metallica" trying to play "old Metallica" songs. What I mean is, everything pre-Black Album had this tightness to the sound...every note...every song, just seemed very articulate. Starting with the Black Album, and from there on, all the songs lost that tightness, and they sound more "loose," less like a technical metal band and more like some guys casually screwing around. Yes, it may seem more natural for most bands, but Metallica was known for being technical masters.

Compared to post-Black Album stuff, Death Magnetic is awesome. Compared to pre-Black Album stuff, Death Magnetic is a bit under par. But compared to half the shit that's out there now, Death Magnetic is a pretty damn good album.

I actually wasn't going to buy it when it came out, but I was at the mall and Hot Topic was selling it for $5 on release-day only. I figured what the fuck...I'll give it a try. I think my biggest gripe with it is them naming the song Unforgiven III. Talk about fucking stupid. It's not like they're telling a story or doing a concept album. Give the song a different name and it won't seem so cheesey.

All in all, I actually like Death Magnetic, and am glad I forked out my hard-earned $5 . For those who listened to it once and panned it, give it a few more listens. It grows on you. Trust me, the first time I heard "The Day That Never Comes" on the radio, I thought it was a jumbled piece of shit. Now I actually dig the song.

If you guys want to keep listening to their stuff from the 80's, then just buy their old albums and play them all day.

Fuck, get a clue. That was 20 years ago. Shit changes. Hopefully most of you have changed over the past 20 years as well. Like the new album for what it is, or dont like it. Comparing it to what they released 20+ years ago is just stupid. I'm sure that for every one of thier old fans that whines and complains that thier new stuff doesnt sound like thier old stuff, they probably pick up three new fans that like the new sound.
