I was going to get my tongue peirced but then I read how if they cut a specific muscle in your tongue it leaves you with a speech impediment.

Also in a freak incident a girl who had her tongue peirced got an infection that travelled all the way into her brain.

Exactly - this is why I let them fuck with me so much... I figured it would help clean out the wounds, and would provide some good, clean Jackass-style entertainment for my friends.

I know you were trying to be a jackass with that advice, but rinsing your mouth with warm salt water is actually how most piercers (the ones who are up to date with the best aftercare techniques) recommend caring for a tongue piercing.

And yes, I have a pierced tongue, w/ an 8 gauge barbell in it. I plan to stretch it up to 4ga, eventually. (I have 9 other piercings as well : Graucho) I didn't do it for attention -- I did it because I was looking for a way to keep from cutting. When I have a new piercing or tat, I'm much less likely to cut...and since I'm, shall we say, orally fixated, I just like having the jewelry in my mouth to play with.

Eat crushed ice, let it dissolve in your mouth. Drink lots of water. Rinse your mouth out with warm salt water -- put just enough sea salt (also known as kosher salt) in warm water to make it barely taste salty, and then swish it around in your mouth. Avoid listerine and harsh mouthwashes -- they kill the new scar tissue growing around the barbell.

Also, as soon as the swelling goes down, go back to your piercer and get a shorter barbell -- when people talk about chipping their teeth with their tongue jewelry, it's because they were lazy assholes and never got the shorter bar to put in. The length varies, but both beads on either end of the bar should be barely touching your tongue, on top and bottom. If the bottom ball rubs against your teeth, get it swapped out for an acrylic bead. If that doesn't help, the placement is fucked and you might as well take it out.

And for god's sake, don't fuck around with all the cutie-pie beads and shit they sell for co-eds with pierced tongues. They look stupid, and they tie you down to keeping your piercing at 14ga, which is pretty fucking wimpy. As you talk and play with the piercing, it'll stretch naturally, and it will feel a whole lot more comfortable with a 12 gauge or larger bar in it, I promise you.

Last piece of advice -- if you're going to be changing the barbell yourself and taking it out to clean it once it's healed, get a box of latex gloves. The gloves let you get a better grip on the beads, and then tighten them up again when you put the barbell back in. I've only swallowed one bead off my barbell in a year and a half, and it was because my piercer didn't screw it down tight enough.

I probably could have shoved the earring through, but I'm a wimp. Any suggestions for keeping holes open in cases like that? I'd like to get my ears pierced again and I don't want them to close up again on me.

Salts great, as everyone says. I use it when I have sores in my mouth. I just went through that. You get about 15 seconds of mercy, then *bam*. Quite painful for a minute and a half. I'm sure my landlord was startled by my squeals.

Some people can leave their jewelry out for a long time and not have the hole close up, and some people can't. If you get your ears pierced again, try waiting longer to change the earrings, maybe. I don't know -- 4 months sounds like they should have been fully healed. Did you wait to put new earrings in and leave the holes empty? You may not be able to do that -- you may have to keep some kind of jewelry in them at all times.

I had them out for about 5 minutes... I tried putting hoops in and failed miserably, then I couldn't get the other pair of earrings (which I had just bought too) in.

But then again, it MIGHT be because I had a big issue with my hair in the studs when I had them. That caused lotsa fun problems. Some days I'd spend a good thirty minutes trying to get the dumb earrings to turn. It could be they didn't heal properly.

I'll try leaving them in longer next time before taking them out, but I think my hair was getting in the way of them healing, which may have been my problem all along. (Any suggestions for that? I have long hair.)
