:mad OMG, is this development company smoking crack? NEED feedback and quotes!

A friend of mine had developed a huge medical site through a shotty company that is trying to run his ass through the ringer...... I don't write or install scripts, but PLEASE leave your feedback (and quotes, because I am looking for someone that has their head screwed on straight to give a reasonable quote on this project)

Install a simple (one of those free or cheap VB -- just a bulletin board where the moderator can make sections, perm. topics, sticky threads and have editing powers.

His Dev. company quoted him 160 man hours. I almost crapped my pants and am still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor.

What is the real time involved (I have seen it done in hours) and what would you charge to do it? This is a NON adult, NON prescription site, it is a MEDICAL site for DOCS/PATIENTS.

bare install like 10 mins. Doing some customizing an hour or 2. Heavy customizing thousands of hours. But ya simple install and setup maybe a 2 hour quote and thats being beyond generous.

For 160 man hours, you could hire a firm to write the entire script from scratch. To install a script, should take less than 1 billable hour (assuming its an over the shelf program which most scripts are).

even with some pretty robust customization, can't see billing over 40 hours. a lot of the things you may want has probably already been done - especially open source scripts.

damn this reminds me of what my company just went through (cuz they didn't listen to me lol)

He doesn't want it written, he wants to intall a pre-written script. ??? (Like most sites where the VB isnt the main focus) His site isn't all about the board like gfy, it's just an added feature.

Many types of virtual hosting accounts come with 1 click install of forums. I think we have one virtual server that has installatron that allows clients to install many scripts with one click. Do you know what type of hosting panel he has? He may have something like that and not even realize it.

this ^^^

and even if they did write it from scratch I heavily doubt it would be equal to the stability of VB or something similar. Installing the script should take less than an hour, and depending on what exactly they were customizing, I don't see how they could have more than eight extra hours into it. Sorry to hear about all that.

a couple of us with only a little script experience and no bbs experience installed a copy and made all the important changes and some changes in look and feel within 10 hours. i suspect that either the development company is a total ripoff joint or they've never worked with vb.

btw, i believe you can have vb installed BY vb for a reasonable fee.
