Heh saw this on the weekend, probably the only one mentioned so far I'd consider something most people haven't seen.. Maybe I'm just making assumptions on NZ films though heh.

People should have already seen the good stuff here like The Croupier, Chopper, Once Were Warriors, Pi, Downfall, Gangster #1, Amelie... c'mon what are you up to - going outside and stuff?

This thread is about movies most people have not seen... Titanic is the #1 best selling movie ever.

Manowar 09-29-2008 05:04 AM

The Island was pretty good

Slick 09-29-2008 06:15 AM

I'll throw in "Three O'Clock High", it's an older movie from 87, but it's a great flick. Here's the trailer

Strange Days and Thanks for Smoking are two great mentions. Great movies

My list off the top of my head:

Yeah i've definately skipped over this one. In fact I kinda think I may have thought it was Christina Ricci on the dvd cover from memory...

I forgot to add Thanks for Smoking was great too. Perfume was a happy random choice (i've taken to chosing a section and random and getting out half a dozen videos that don't look like total obvious crap so 6-7 movies that started with "p" and the good ones were Perfume and The Piano).

Actually, in the "looked crap but weren't so bad" stakes Steven Zahn's turn in Employee Of The Month was pretty cool.. (obviously i'm not talking about the shit-tastic Dane Cook one.)

Had one of the best "bad guy payback" scenes ever in a movie. You know the one I'm talking about, which involves some snorting.

Don't listen to that hyperbole. It's an amazing and different movie, and if you like the director's other films(Run Lola Run, Princess and the Warrior), then you should like Perfume.

Neon Dollars Daniel 09-29-2008 07:10 AM

Jean de Florettes and Mannon de Source are good French films. Beautifully shot and great scores, but slow and provaocative films.

La Haine and the Three Colours trilogy (Red, White and Blue) are some more good French films I have seen recently.

Near Dark is a cool Vampire film from 1987 not a lot of people have seen.

I LVOED september tapes, but mainly cause i thought it was real till halfway through the movie :(

Stellar 09-29-2008 03:09 PM

Cess,

I started this thread.. I say Smiley Face is fucking awful and I dare anyone to watch it and tell me different.

No amount of pot or painkillers in the world could make that movie watchable, sorry.

The only reason I mentioned Freddy Got Fingered was that it was on your list also, so if you thought that was a good one (warning or not) and you suggest Smiley Face on that same list.. you fail.

But other than that,

some seriously great responses here people :)

Yes I know most of us should have already seen chopper, pi, sleep when i'm dead, croupier, etc.. but the sad fact is a lot of people haven't and they aren't exactly mainstream.

It's kind of like Requiem For A Dream, some people have seen it and some haven't.

Here is another obscure movie to check out:

NAKED LUNCH

Stellar 09-29-2008 03:11 PM

Your Friends & Neighbors,

and here is probably one of my best suggestions yet:

The Young Poisoner's Handbook.

skrog 09-29-2008 03:15 PM

Snatch
Bloodsucking Freaks
Maniac (1980)
Oldboy
Big Trouble in Little China
The Gate
Terror Train

Stellar 09-29-2008 03:56 PM

I just went through this entire thread, and only have a handful of movies to check out most of them foreign.

What are some good foreign epics.. those french ones that got mentioned?

I really like period pieces, any suggestions?

Another suggestion from me: FOLLOWING

Romeo is Bleeding is good too.

Un long dimanche de fiançailles (A Very Long Engagement)

Stellar 09-29-2008 04:19 PM

Thanks friendo, downloading this now :)

I like nothing more than to put in a nice beautiful period piece, pack a bowl of fire nugs, pop and lt, and get lost for a while... especially during times like this.

Looks like this movie will do the job.

By the way, another good epic is "The Ogre" or Der Unhold with John Malchovich.

Le pact De Loupes (Brotherhood of the Wolf)

chodadog 09-29-2008 06:11 PM

Even though it's already been mentioned, I'd have to recommend Downfall.

JFK by Oliver Stone.
Bobby by Emilio Estevez.
Anything directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie, Delicatessen, City of Lost Children)
The Proposition (Australian "western" written and directed by Nick Cave)
The Killing Fields (if you have any interest in the Khmer Rouge)
Any movie by Broken Lizard (Super Troopers, Beerfest)
War Inc.
Tsotsi
The Italian Job (the original, with Michael Caine)
Alfie (the original, also with Michael Caine)
Sukiyaki Western Django (needs to be seen to be believed. haha)
Slacker
Altered States
Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz
Pan's Labyrinth
I Heart Huckabees
Stranger Than Fiction
Black Sheep (hilarious New Zealand comedy-horror movie revolving around genetically modified sheep gone wrong)
Appleseed and Appleseed Ex Machina (for the slickest CGI anime you'll ever see)
Series 7 (when reality TV goes extreme. a disturbing parody of the world's love affair of reality tv)
Candy (very moving movie with Heath Ledger)
The Wind That Shakes The Barley (no movie shows more emotionally how the peace treaty between the british and irish and the civil war that followed tore apart families)

I was thinking of mentioning that but I thought given it has Will Ferrell in it people that normally wouldn't be into something this literate would have been at least tricked into it.
If you haven't seen it, please do.

Also, I tried to watch Candy but the DVD was fucked.. I'm getting that more and more, having the DVD freeze all over the shop and making the movie unwatchable.

Video store? :)

I don't really download movies. I've only done a couple. Oh actually out of the two i've downloaded here's one you might have missed: Science des rêves, La (The Science of Sleep) it's from Michel Gondry ie Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. It's not the best movie ever, but it's a charming little gem if you're into that kind of thing (weird left of center movies).

Brotherhood of the Wolf is ok.
