How much does it cost to have a baby?

I never even though about it since I live in Canada.

Just the actual birth of the baby? Not including diapers and formula?

What happens if you can't afford it?

dont you get free insurance up there? they should cover most of it.

its free if you have the baby NOT in the hospital. a public library, petting zoo, Chinese restaurant... whatever floats your boat.

seriously, probably like $3-$4k is my guess.

if you cant afford it im sure they will have the baby repo people come after you they will just try adn collect through collection agencies if you skip out on the bill

If I remember right - around $8,000 with doctors visits, hospital room, meds, etc.

Then about $500,000 for food, college, clothes, ...

$3 to 4k? WHAT?!! No no no no no ...... try $10,000 plus and that's doing it on the cheap and just the very basics. Hospitals will actually work out in advance payment plans for you so that when you get pregnant you pay off the cost of what it is going to cost you in monthly installments for the first 4 to 6 months. This of course doesn't cover your weekly doctor visits, prenatal pills, ultra sounds, etc. but at least the big big bill of the hospital is out of the way.

it only costs actual natural born citizens, if you are illegal immigrant its free. Citizens have to provide Social# - illegal immigrants just show up.

if people educate themself and look into the numbers it would blow your mind...

some hospitals have 70% illegal immigrants birth rates - guess who pays?

its over $70 million per year in some hostpals, all illegal immigrants

Had 2 kids here in Canada and it cost me about $40 in total for all the parking I did. That's about it.
Hell, my wife even spent 4 solid weeks in the hospital leading up to my 2nd boy's birth, by c-section where she also had her tubes tied in the same proceedure and it still only cost me for parking.

Heard from a friend...first kid born in Canada, no cost...NOTHING, even with extremely complicated delivery!!! Said it felt like shoplifting walking out of there. Second one, born in Hawaii, 3500 for hospital costs, plus another 1000 for doctors fees, just for delivery, which was easy, not to mention cost for visits, etc. And that was with excellent insurance.

health insurance in canada is not free, don't know how that rumour got started.

There is 1 health insurance company , and you pay based on how much you make.

nope , everyone in the hospital is doing volunteer work of course it costs, everything costs in the uk you pay for it in taxes, very similar to how canada does it, in the usa they charge you a "pay as you need it" rate, so if you aren't ever sick you dont need to waste thousands of dollars paying for other people that are kinda

If you have a bunch of relatives, you will be swamped with baby wear and toys to last for the entire year. Birth itself is being either sponsored by the government or covered by your insurance company. It costs nothing but sleepless nights and lots of nerves.

With all the co-pays for scans, bloodwork and the delivery even with good insurance I think I paid about $1,000 just recently. The total the insurance paid was around $15,000.

The 4D scans are like $900, the anesthetist fees for the epidural $3k! Sure adds up.

All worth it though!

In truth I don't know what the actual cost was when my son was born, I had insurance and only had to pay the deductible

About 10k for birth. That's for a normal birth. Can be way more then that.

250k over the kids life (to 18).

had my daughter 3 weeks early so she was in icu for a week. cost of just the hospital for she and i was 20k. baby items and cloths to be ready usually covered by the baby shower. if the baby is breast fed, cost is zero except diapers until weined. hopefully you have insurance for the appts. before, during and after the birth.

We didn't have insurance for any of our 3 births, so my wife went to midwives instead of hospitals, which put us back about 2 grand per baby.

I used to complain about that... but now that 2 of the 3 are toddlers we spend nearly that much every month on groceries & clothes

Exactly. $0.48 of every dollar I earned in 2007 went to various levels of government in the form of federal / provincial income tax, GST, gas tax, property tax, vehicle taxes, parking tickets, liquor tax, PST, etc, etc, etc, etc....

Fantastic flick.

It cost me $2600 for my first at a birthing center, and $2200 for an attended home birth the second time around. Both costs included all prenatal care with midwives.

If I had had insurance through an employer, it would have been covered same as if I had gone through a hospital, but I had a lot more say about every aspect of my prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal choices going through midwives.

And both kiddos haven't been all that expensive afterwards either, as I haven't had to bother with formula costs or pesky recurring diaper costs. :D

My oldest is starting to cost me a bit more as I have her enrolled in swimming and dance classes now. My girls are the only grandbabies in the family, so I almost never have to shell out for clothes and toys --- grandmas love to do that! hehehe

Hey Jay..my advice is whatever you sit down and try to figure out expenses as far as any medical, basic supplies, food, clothes, etc...take that number and double it to be on the safe side. It might not come all at once but trust me it adds up. We just started our son at toddler school and it's $600/month for 3 days a week!

My other advice to you is don't fall trap to all that marketing and brainwashing about what is good for your baby, how to raise her, what foods she should/shouldn't be on, etc. How long to breastfeed vs formula and so on. Do what you guys think is the right thing to do. Everyone will give you an opinion. Everyone is an expert on child development. Everyone knows whats best for YOUR baby. Don't spent too much money on clothes, they outgrow it too fast. Don't get too many toys, if your baby is anything like most babies, they will end up playing with everything but their toys.

Hope this helps. Hit me up or call me if you need more help. I also strongly recommend www.babycentre.com as a resource.

ps: the first 6 months are pretty boring for a guy if you ask me. Once she starts interacting, getting her motor skills, recognizing your voice/face and starts smiling, that's when the fun begins

By comparison, income tax in US is comparable to France yet our two kids cost us nothing in hospital or doctor's fees. In fact, by having kids we lowered our income tax to the point where I pay 1.1% and my wife pays 4.2%. If we have a 3rd kid, we both pay no income tax, and a fourth, the state pays us income tax rebate.

So, how does that work then, if everyone pays for childbirth in terms of taxes?

FWIW, I pay 75 euro a month in health insurance...

--edit - to clarify, the reason we pay lower taxes is cos most of the charges we pay for kids eg creche, nanny, sport, food can be claimed against our income tax. The elder having now started school cannot have these charges offset, so it goes back to normal. But still the first 5 years are heavily subsidised

Single guys with no babies are ass raped with taxes in Europe

The european welfare system was created by women for women - in most welfare states men pay way more in taxes during their entire life, then what they receive, and women pay way less in taxes during their entire life, then what they receive.

And that is really why the socialists in Europe can still be in power - no matter that their ideology have been proven many times more irrational compared to the free market. They simply bribe/buy one part of the population with the other part of the population´s wealth creation.
