Vanilla has to be the hardest software to get up an running with. I am pretty good with scripts but it made no sense at all. I've used Smartthumbs, Tpgx, Autogallery Pro/Sql, Comus and they all were better. Vanilla has great features but to actually get it to generate a page I never figured out.

seems to me the best choice costs zero to get started (just a small traffic skim %) and then you can upgrade to paid at any time if you wish

If he can't get it to work then no matter the cost it's not the best choice.

I run TGPX on XX sites and it rocks... I can make it dance and sing any way I want, and you wouldn't even know it was TGPX on the backend.... love it and the price was decent, even for server version and even for removing the copyright notice as well!
