    How important is SEO?

I want to build a site and focus on providing the best user experience but doing so and keeping SEO functionality at the same time would greatly complicate development if not make it impossible. What % of traffic do you guys see from search engines vs other sources such as repeat visitors and other sites? Maybe I should make a generic version of the site for the search engines to spider and then another that sits on top of the same page and just completely takes over everything through javascript. Opinions?

Search engine traffic is like free money. Why would you not want it? It's typically more focused and higher quality. So in answer to your question, yes PROPER seo is vital to any successful marketing strategy.

quality repeat visitors tend to not make you as much money as fresh, new, only-there-for-a-moment, search engine visitors

it is an unfortunate reality of the internet, and one that makes the whole 'google thing' even more difficult in the coming future, because they always talk about quality sites and yet the sites that make the most money from their own ad program tend to be ones that get lots of fresh se traffic that is only there long enough to click on an ad or two and leave.... forums are especially notorious for that, as repeat quality visitors tend to get 'ad-blind' very rapidly and take up your bandwidth but never click on ads or buy anything

        no easy answers unfortunately

Your main site doesn't have to have SEO, you can have other sites that do and then feed traffic from them to your site, and if the people like it they'll search for your site specifically or go there directly.
