Napster...they fucked up hard!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080915/...ter_bestbuy_dc

They were able to basically get away with copyright infringement to dominate the
music download market. But blew it all by trying to fight the inevitable in court.

The court shut then down and that's when they lost a big share of surfers who
went else where.

All they had to do was "agree to agree" with the music companies to make out
a fair royalty plan before the court shut down their site.

Yeah, too bad they lost 2 billion they could have made and lost the company.

$121 million <---

Read it again.

Included in the deal is approximately $67 million in cash and short term investments held by Napster, meaning the net price of the deal would be $54 million, the companies said.

Napster gave up $67 million of shit they owned in the sale!!!

They made $54 million. Now subtract all the legal fees and other bills the need to pay.

so they made millions of dollars providing a service for people to steal music. Doesn't sound like they made out too bad to me, sure they "could" have made more, but on the flipside , they could have gone to jail and had millions in ftc fines

How do you think they came to the net price of $54 million?

I'm sure that napster people have outstanding dept and that went into figuring this price.
Chances are that they actually made next to nothing on the sell since they still have
to close out old depts.

In other words; when me and you sell all our domains etc... it will probably be because
we need the money to pay off something else. After we sell and we take care of
over due business the money is gone.

Napster is owned by different people now days. Shaun Fanning (or whatever his name was) who originally controlled the lionshare of the original napster (with his family) sold out the domain/brand a few years back that is when it went legal.

He fucked up sure. He should of just moved overseas and went to a less centralized p2p system. He could of been limewire today, even bigger, and still taking in millions upon millions yearly.

You realize the Napster of the last 5-6 years is not the same Napster that was commiting copyrigh violation. And this curent Napster did in fact have deals with the record companies. The kid that started Napster sold out like 7 years ago.

ILLEGALLY. Anyone here who wants to be taken serious as a business person shouldn't be advocating doing illegal things.

Yeah, because our capitalistic society and the pornographic industry in particular are both built on such high ethical standards. Anyone who wants to be taken seriously as a business person needs to realise the reality of the situation. Most "business people" on this forum are negotiating illegal mailer/adware deals behind the scenes when they can so don't try and get on your high horse over napster. And no it wouldn't of been illegal, limewire, the Gnutella protocol, etc are not illegal as far as I am aware.

They bought the company for $121 million.

When you buy a company, you buy all of its debts as well.

How much Napster is actually worth is unknown; it could be owe more than its worth.

But it doesn't matter, because the owner has ended up with $121 million.
