Yeah, the inflation rate is distorted by white-goods and clothes etc which have fallen - but are only an occasional purchase, unlike food and heating which are not...

Not a lie at all..bread I noticed last year because it shot up to almost double. Fresh fruit, regardless of what they say, has also jumped. I buy my husband apples every week to take to work and they have spiked in price over the last 6 months or so.

Electricity is a big issue for us at the moment. It took a while to hit us but over the past month our rate has gone up a huge amount. We are having to experiment with turning things off during the day and seeing what we can do without to bring the bill back down.

Ive got my electric bill down to less than £400 per year and with generous usage..... which is crazy. It can be done, just make sure you have low energy light bulbs, LCD tv's, A-rated appliances (fridge freezer, washing machine, etc) and if you have electric heaters make sure they are the "oil filled" type as they are relatively low consumption compared to the blow/bar heaters.

We have the bulbs and A-rated stuff. It doesn't help that my husband loves to collect computers and that sort of thing. All of which, apart from what I use for work, have to be turned off when he isn't using them now. We don't have electric heaters and with the dogs I would be nervous with them anyway.

Which isn't going to help this area as part of it were starting to come up a bit because of the DLR making it a viable place to commute to Canary Wharf from. The DLR is about to open in Woolwich..that area was going to come 'up' next but not if they are losing their jobs.

The household bills snapshot I pay more for everything on their except my mortgage.

At the moment I pay £120 combined for my Gas and Electricity but I've been told thats going up around 30%. So that means I'll be paying almost £160 per month for that. Its really annoying.

I think people are glad to be in anything but banking right now, the happy days are gone, at least for a while

the whole UK public transport system is nuts. If you wanna travel 200 miles here its $40 roundtrip, last time I did that in the UK I paid 3 times as much

The DLR is actually very good and in general for the number of people that London moves on public transport every day I generally think London public transport is pretty good. I grew up in a part of the States that didn't even have a taxi company so I am glad to have what I have.

That said, when you go out of London and start paying for national trains that system is messed up for pricing. It seriously is too expensive to go across a fairly small country on train and then they wonder why people drive.
