Stephen King wrote stories for porno mags

Yep!
Saw it on MSNBC's show "Headliners & Legends". In the 70's he was living in a trailer looking for a job with a wife and 2 kids. His only little income was stories he wrote for mens adult mags. Then his book "Carrie" sold for 400K, a real rags to riches story! Very Cool!

The journey of a thousand miles begins with first step.

Or in Stephen King's case the first book.

If you look at his own bibliography he was published in Cavalier, Gent, Gallery, Oui, Penthouse, and Playboy. What was published were some of his short stories...many which has since been published in his anthologies.

I'm a King fanatic btw.. have many signed limited and first editions.

Sure did. Lots of famed writers did. Some of them pay pretty well for a story too.

So is my mom, I get her a hardback copy every christmas for a long time now.

If you didn't catch that show last night maybe you can catch it on a rerun, it was really quite interesting.

Cheers,

I forget what it's called, but he has a book on writing where he talks about how he writes. Like his patterns, styles, methods... theories.

Well when it went on tape, he read it himeslf. Truly amazing. He speaks in a way that even I wanted to take up writing. He's funny as hell, and you get to hear how he was inspired to write some stories.

He probably write 8 hours a day. Even if nothing is flowing, and it's all crap, and nothing makes sense, he still writes. He's like a machine. And yes, I can see that if you write that much, how a few sex stories are bound to be written.

Excellent writer.

Speaking of Stephen King - Did you guys know that there were a number of things from his books that turned into reality.

For example, there was a short story called 'Rage' that I read back in High School. The storyline was so similar to the Columbine incident, it's scary.

There's also another story that ended with a sniper takin people out in public, like the sniper that has been in the news lately.

Isn't it ironic? - Don't cha think?

Yah they talked about that book "Rage" He pulled it of distribution after that kid killed his teacher and they found a copy of the book on the kids dresser.

I didn't know Stephen Hawking wrote adult stories... I always thought he was trying to solve a unified theory: the Theory of Everything. Weird.

I have mostly first edition hardcovers... none signed, though.

wow, it's kinda cool to know of other King fans...

I really couldn't pick a favorite, though as I really did enjoy everything I've read of his. *looks over at bookshelf* hmmm... nope liked them all, no favorite.

It's a shame that Stephen King can't come out with a movie that's worth a shit. You'd figure that the 'Master of Horror' would have some kick ass movies.

I saw that show myself, but most of the info I already knew. He's amazing! I've been a King fan since I read "Salem's Lot" the first time at about 14. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be "The Stand", hands down.

Just for the record, he doesn't do his own movies... like many other authors, he sells the rights to them. He directed one (now I can't remember which one), and had a major hand in the second version of The Shining, but he's pretty much at the mercy of whoever buys the rights. I always watch them, just to see if anyone has figured out a way to do him justice, but I have yet to like any of the movie versions with the exception of Carrie, Christine and maybe his attempt at The Shining, and even those left a lot to be desired.

heehee PK... you visit www.stephenking.com too, eh? I can't WAIT for the rest of the Dark Tower series... I'm hooked!

The Stand is my personal fave as well...I have read them all

It's true that there is lots of money to be made by writing articles and stories for men's mags...you would think that money alone would pay for something a little bit more roomy than a trailer.

I organize comic book conventions from time to time and one of the artists who I often have is Berni Wrightson. Berni created Swamp Things and did tons of creepy art in magazines and comics. He met Stephen King early on in his career and they became good friends. King asked him to do the illustrations for The Stand. If you read that book, all the black and white art inside is his. He also did the Creepshow poster and the opening art for each segment in the movie. He hangs out with King a bunch and was with him a lot when he was recovering from being hit by that van a few years ago. They just put out a cookbook together lol.
I had Berni as a guest at one of my shows in '96 and he came to the show from King's house and brought me a copy of The Stand and Cycle of the Werewolf personalized by both of them. Had it for less than 2 years before I lost it in a house fire
Went out to dinner with Berni one night and he told me a bunch of stories about stuff that he and King did in the late 70's early 80's back when they were a little younger and wilder. Some crazy shit.

Here is a funny piece by Berni

Here is the Creepshow poster

and one of the cooler pieces from Cycle of the Werewolf

Everything is axiomatic.

I just finished reading his new book "From a Buick 8". Classic King.
Has ties to the Dark Tower. I think the Buick in the book is one of the kinds of transportation that the Low Men in Yellow Hats rode around in while looking for Ted in Hearts In Atlantis. The Low Men in Yellow Hats were of course agents of the Crimson King looking to bring Ted back so that he could help them try to take control of the Dark Tower. I wonder if we will see Ted somewhere in the new Dark Tower books. Would be interesting. Insomnia had a good connection to the Dark Tower also. Many of his books in the last 10 years have. The Black House and The Talisman of course were heavily connected to the Dark Tower.

I love how he interconnects all of his books. One of my favorite things about reading a new one from him is wondering where the tie-in will be. Hearts in Atlantis was so cool for this.

You really have to wonder what goes on inside that head of his. Some of the things that he writes about are just so out there...but I too love how he interconnects a lot of his books and most of all with reference to the Dark Tower...the book Black House gave me nightmares for a week.
