My parrot had a terrible accident

I have an African Grey who despite having a wing "trimmed", flew into the ceiling fan last week and one of the blades cut her beak off. Thank God she survived with just that injury.

yesterday I took her to the vet, where they re-attached her beach using a plastic compound. Well, today, she tried to climb the outside of her cage, and the "fixed" beak fell off, tearing off more of the little bit she had originally left.

Poor thing, I feel so bad for her! Anybody has any experience with birds here, and can offer any advice? I called the vet and all he said was "bring her back to reattach it again on Monday"!

poor parrot, i didn't realize there was plastic surgeons for birds. how does it work, they just sort of glue it back on? does it heal back to his head or it it just permanently held on by the adhesive?

I'm assuming it uses it to climb its cage and all that, just from watching them, that's going to put a lot of strain on it, so I would expect to have it fall off unless they are using some kind of super adhesive (I'm assuming they cant use anything too strong because it would harm the bird. That's going to end up being one of those things where you either have to keep attaching the beak or I'm sorry to say, put the bird down. Just what im assuming, but there could be some way to re-attach it more permanently. Best of luck.

I think you'd get better advice on a bird related forum. Why would you ask these degenerates?

I suggest plucking all its feathers out and eating it for a scrumptious parrot soup.

I believe a beak prosthetic surgically attached might be an option. I know african greys are not huge beaked like say a cockatoo but this might be a possibility. Probably a very expensive one though.

A bird uses it's beak for everything.

                        That bird is screwed.

her beak should grow back to its normal size in about 4 to 5 months, but in the meantime she's having a hard time eating, since she can't close her mouth.

On the other hand, since this time, when her beak came off after being fixed, it took part of her leftover bone, I'm afraid it will take even more next time.

Angry Jew: they used some sort of acrylic paste that "glued" her leftover beak to the part that had fallen off. When it got hard, it was like actual plastic... then they painted it black, so it looked very natural.

My mother did drive over our rare Madagascan turtle with her car, resulting in a big hole in the poor critter carapace. Blood and bubbles...

The vet promptly fixed it with an epoxy compound (no even vet grade) and some fiber glass...

Carapace, nails are made of keratine and can be fixed with epoxy

The beak, I suppose is the same, but much more troublesome..huge pressures.
and the epoxy emit some nasty gases while drying..still I would ask the vet to fix it again.. and keep the bird in a padded cage for a day.

Ain't the beak will grow back? Ask the vet.

Best wishes to you and your bird.

LOL Lisa, but seriously though, I have a cockatoo and if he lost his beak I think he'd be a goner. I would think a fast setting epoxy might work but I don't know how much working room there is, I mean did it come off the entire face or is there something to attach it to?

Sorry to hear about this, I feel your pain.

I have an african grey that was abused by previous owner by constantly trying to breed him with unsuitable mates. He cant fly and is missing several talons and sometimes he falls of his perch.

I can tell you this african greys are real troopers, they adapt very well because of their mentality and intelligence and it appears they can weather quite a bit so just hang in there im sure everything will be fine.

And by the way having a celing fan is not good practice when you have a parrot. You have to adapt the enviroment in your home for their safety.

As long as you trust the vet I think the bird will be fine. I would get some kind of box or rotating fan with a safety screen cover and disable the ceiling fans. Sometimes flight ability seems to come out of nowhere on a clipped bird.
                                                        gone. long gone.

Or, correct me if I'm wrong, it's just fucking hard to glue back a beak.

                                                          So how is it doing?
I live in your nightmares. I make you dream you're getting bumfucked by a razor blade only to wake up and find I gave your wife an enema and tube-fed you her shit.

That's why I won't own any pet that will die if you can't reattach limbs with staples.
