How good is Google Chrome?

I tried it regularly this week and it's a nice browser and all but I'd still rather use my Firefox 3 with all its plugins. I think Opera is better than Chrome too in many aspects.

I've heard many things about this browser, some say it represents the beginning of the end for Firefox and it seems that everything google does or touches is perfect and gold, despite Google itself never releases an 'alpha' version, others like me say it's good but it's not THAT good. I wonder what you guys think.

It's not the beginning of the end for any other browser(s). Chrome is completely open source and they have introduced new concepts that will improve the web for everyone. They are encouraging others to embrace their approaches (not all of them), but there are a couple that I'd expect to find in future releases of many if not all browsers.

More specifically chrome has contributed greatly with their V8 JavaScript engine that runs JavaScript locally on the end users computer. This makes "web 2.0" style websites function much faster than the traditional method of relying on the browser to handle all the JavaScript. The speed increase is easily noticed when working with content management systems, social networking websites, and other application which use lots of AJAX and JavaScript.

V8 compiles JavaScript source code directly into machine code when it is first executed. There are no intermediate byte codes, no interpreter such as you'd find with JScript (in Internet Explorer), SpiderMonkey (in Firefox), and JavaScriptCore (in Safari).

V8 also, reclaims memory used by objects that are no longer required in a process known as garbage collection. On a daily basis at work (I'm a web developer for a private college) FireFox will easily approach well over 300mb of memory usage by the days end. We use a great deal of JavaScript within the applications that we develop. I've yet to see Chrome use up this kind of memory.

I also expect to see many other browsers introduce the single process for each tab.

This just scratches the surface of what Chrome is really bringing to the table and as a web developer these are the two things that impress me the most with Chrome. Also, don't forget that Chrome is still only in BETA.

Try comparing chrome with other browser on the JavaScript intensive pages such as the JQuery demos: http://ui.jquery.com/repository/late...os/functional/

That exploit doesn't seem to work for us using 0.2.149.29....must have been fixed as it was reported.

Hey calmlikeabomb thanks for the Java answer, it's exactly the kind of reason I was hoping someone would give me. I'm a developer also and having to write code for 3 or 4 different browsers ain't nice.

Chrome still has a long way to go, but then any new browser will.

Chrome's beauty isn't in what it's missing, it's in what it already does that most people will never know about.

Under the hood, it has the potential to radically change the way we view the internet.

just imagine plugins/addons that don't just alter pages or our web experience, but can be placed on the desktop as an application. Imagine a browser where everything runs smoother, more efficiently and if something does go wrong, you can fix it without having to close everything to start over.

The #1 biggest complaint I hear about Chrome so far from users is that it doesn't have Firefox's plugins but how could it? It just came out.

Developers know, however, that making plugins for it will actually be easier and more powerful than Firefox's... developers know that they can make plugins that will convince people to switch.

Google knows it too, and they're counting on it.

Think of Chrome as a house. Google built the foundation. No one will live on some pavement in the dirt. But you get the right architects and developers to put a state of the art mansion on it that has an unlimited number of rooms... people will line up to get in there.

You're comparing a BETA with a finished product. Not exactly a fair comparison. By the way Chrome almost scores as high as Opera on the Acid 3 test. Opera scores 83/100 Chrome 79/100. These are the highest among browsers.

I wonder if it's worth mentioning IE8's score.

Once again, everything Google does is BETA, even gmail which has worked remarkably well over the past few years is still a beta version (under development).

I think always having a beta version of their products is a way google has to tell people their stuff might eventually one day have a bug, in case you find one google would say it's because it was a beta release, we're only humans, sorry for the inconvenience. =)

Yes we all know it's last. IE 8 is also in beta. I will say that IE8 jumped 9 points form Beta 1 to Beta 2. FireFox is 4th behind Opera, Chrome, and Safari by the way.

Personally I haven't been overly impressed with a lot of things they've done, except for 2 things... Chrome and Android.

Judge me however you like and make what ever assumptions you like. At least I backed up what I thought.

yep, I give you that, it is fast and as far as my experience goes with it, it's a lot less memory consuming than firefox. If google plays its cards right, sooner than later we'll all be using Chrome IMHO. If Google is to become (or already is) the next gigantic software company, I can only hope they rely on product quality rather than on looks like good ole Billy. =)

I had Flash crash using Chrome the other day. Instead of losing the entire window (and possibly other browser windows), the Flash objects on the page just turned black.
