Need Help Fro Costa Rica Folks!

I have a friend from here who is looking to retire in Costa Rica. The consulate here has given him the run around as for what is required for americans moving to Costa Rica.

I need help with the requirements.

Also info on affordable cities and towns and houses/apartments for rent or for sale.

Thanks in advance for any help

Why doen't he simply go as a Tourist, and then when is in country aproach the government agency that handles these types of things.

I would imagine he simply wants to stay in Costa Rica for six months at a time and come back to the states to visit family? I just don't see a Native American leaving to one of these South American countries and never commeing back.

Trust me, he is going to live...1st he is not Native American, he's Natualized, originally from Columbia.

2nd, we are talking, he wants to live there...not just visit from time to time

Man what a can of worms

One thing though, being from Colombian will hinder him rather than help him...

In a nutshell, unless he wants to get married or have a kid here, he's going to have to invest $100k+ in a business, and it is going to be a big legal pain in the ass. If he is retired and receives a retirement pension of any kind in excess of $1k/mo, there is a special clause for retirees as well.

As far as affordability goes, prices are skyrocketing everywhere and I can't wait until we catch up to the american recession

totally true, been there a few times, never saw what the big attraction was. Prices have greatly escalated in the popular areas. NO deals around as far as I could see, development is going crazy and everyone is trying to speculate

Ya'll are so silly. When I said I was looking at property in Costa Rica a couple of years ago, BradShaw and WEGCory told me it was a third world country like Ethiopia. No way people want to live there and housing prices are going up.

/heavy sarcasm because I'm STILL kicking myself for not getting a 2BR/2BA 2 story condo, gated, block from the beach for $134K I just thought it was hoot others were so incredibly misinformed about how it was growing especially for Americans.

I wish that was true, the biggest problem with this country is how many people want to live here

Haaank - long time no see

I would recommend DR to him instead, it's like CR 5-7 years ago price/investment-wise, friendlier people and easier to gain residency.

does he have an American passport? There's different rules for different countries. As an american or canadian it's not that hard. We can stay here up to 3 months & then leave the country for 3 days & come back for another 3 months.

From the way I understand it, there are things you cannot do with a tourist visa that you can do with a permanent resident visa. Don't ask me what, I just remember parts of a conversation with someone who moved to Panama about why they were seeking permanent resident visas ;) And heck, you can ALWAYS come back. Just making yourself a permanent resident legally doesn't mean they don't let you leave the country ever again
