I can see TGP owners doing this to all the galleries on their site, but I doubt it would be worth it. Random banners have an extremely low click-thru and they don't sell very well even when a surfer clicks through.

it's different with frames. You can put a code to break out of frames automatically. If this xites things ends up getting pretty big, you'll see a lot of deep site hyperlinking laws being enforced.

"when you try to follow a link to another site you are sent back to this page". This IS illegal and there are cases on record showing successful prosecution by the FCC.

Their php script gets the page, inserts their banner (VERY crudely), and gives you the output.

1) All requests go through their server... which requests the document.... then displays to surfer (so x2 as sloooow minimum).

2) they can spoof the referer with this, (currently set to http://)

3) they can't spoof the IP they request the page from.

4) If you have their IPs, you can block this.

But this Xites thing is seriously fucked up. Altering the content of someone else's website is just fucked up, whether it's done via proxy or not. You're basically taking a site's adspace and using it for your own advantage, without giving the webmaster a dime. No way in hell this shit is legal.

Also, this thing makes many sites simply <i>unuseable</i>.

Click on any link, and you'll get microsoft's custom 404 page. Totally fucked up.

So, not only does it insert banners onto other people's websites, it essentially makes them unuseable in the way they were intended. Fuck this program. Fuck the people that started it.
