Canadians rather save on fuel over people lives?

TORONTO - Air Canada's regional carrier Jazz is removing life vests from all its planes to save weight and fuel.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap_travel/20...ine_life_vests

wow....what a way of thinking? How much weight difference can foam type life vests make? come on.....although i can understand there is hardly any water flying from Canada to US ;-)

this whole thing sounds messed up and all because of oil...no more Bush and too much Dick

How many times have life vests on planes ever actually saved? I'm curious.

That's a good Q. I saw an "Air Crash Investigation" ep where they determined that an aircraft that accidentally "landed" on the water due to faulty altitude readings probably hit it without breaking up instantly, then subsequently sank. Pretty horrible way to go, but a lifejacket isn't going to be much use there, unless you're Tom Hanks.

Well if they stripped all the fancy paint off their airlines..

They would end up saving a whole hell of a lot more than by removing the life vests.

Yeah I've seen lots of those air crash investigations, and with the exception of that plane that crashed just off a big tourist beach, I don't recall anyone surviving a water landing.

Yea I think it's one of those "make you feel good things". You don't really ever hear of people surviving plane crashes unless it was close to landing or just taking off and even then it's almost no chance.

Great point. Not the best colors to be flying so close to the sun with either. That air conditioner must be cranking on the tail.

I always wonder about the oxygen things. Do they ever get used? Don't they add weight and cost of construction? I am all over ditching the lifevests if we are not over water and then they can skip the explantion of them too and save us all 5 minutes of our lives.

I wonder how much more efficient both airports and airplanes would be if they got rid of all the useless shit that doesn't make anyone safer, but just gives an illusion that they are trying.

It sounds messed up because you are clueless as to what JAZZ is and where it flies.

Funny thing is all of the life vests on board prolly weigh the same as 2 passengers :P Oh yah that'll really make a difference in gas costs..

They probably know what they are doing, they probably don't ever fly over water, so life-vests would be useless..

No idea, but a lot have been killed by opening them too soon and drowning on a sinking plane because they can't get out.

if it was not used everyone was dead, now everyone survived...

above several feet theres no air or bad air. im not a expert in that, but 5 minutes there without oxygen then people pass out.

losing consciousness is not the same as dying.

btw... there is no such thing as "no air" unless your leaving the earth atmosphere.

but yeah, thanks for the great info

Do you actually try to come off this idiotic, like some sort of gimmick or whatnot?

Have you even seen such charts and how they effect yearly gas costs? Hell why do you think many US carriers have decided to ditch in flight entertainment, well it is because they extra few hundred pounds that it weighs will save the airline a very large sum in gas per year.

That would explain all the six-foot dead people walking around.

i suppose it is just the over land flights

canada should really just step away from the world.....first we need to make sure everyone has about 5 kids each..and everyone needs to be in the military for 1 year when they turn 18.
increase our military to about 25 million and just shut the door to the world.
we dont really need anyone else...too bad it will never happen

I read that a couple of days ago and my first reaction was wtf. Then I actually read the article and they're only being used on flights that fly relatively close to land, but more importantly, they're replacing the life vests with floating devices. If they just removed them altogether, yeah, that would be fucked up.
