I haven't seen a film this summer that was more than just 'okay'

I am a film fan and the summer is always filled with a lot of trips to the cinema. There were a number of films we were really looking forward to seeing but so far we haven't seen anything that was more than just okay.

X-Files - really wanted it to be good but it was near enough rubbish

Batman - I loved the first one and this one wasn't bad but it just wasn't as good. I thought about it and I think that is because there was very little character study and development which made the first stand out.

Hellboy 2 - On top of being a fan of the first Hellboy I am also a world cinema person and a big fan of Guillermo del Toro's work. Hellboy 2 was okay and by far the best part for me was the visuals that you come to expect from a del Toro film. It just wasn't fantastic. Perhaps there just wasn't enough of the of the actual Hellboy character for me. To me it is the humor that was interlaced with the action that made the first film fun to watch.

Anybody actually seen a film this summer that was more than just okay?

I heard Tropic Thunder is supposed to be really funny. I haven't gotten around to see it yet.

Batman and Hellboy were more than "just ok" to me. I did prefer the previous Dark Knight movie and story, except the Joker was great in this one. Hellboy was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the visuals too.

I had really hoped the X Files movie would have been great, but it was too preachy/creepy for me. What a waste. I had hoped it'd be more supernatural maybe.

Step Brothers

Go see it if you haven't. Hell, if it's even still at the theaters. It was fucking hilarious and well worth every penny I spent seeing it.

Yeah, I wanted X Files to be so much better. They could have re-invented the franchise through film in the same sort of way that Star Trek did but instead I think they killed it. I don't even think the core of the story was all that bad. It was sort of nice for it not to be about aliens but they wasted it.

Hellboy was fun and I loved the visuals but I guess I just wanted it to be fantastic and it was just okay. More of the characters would have made me enjoy it more rather than just 'here they are now lets have action'. The best bits were the interaction between Hellboy and the other characters in moments like the singalong..give me more than that.

Batman was also okay but not great but I am willing to admit that a lot of that for me could come from comparing it to the first movie which was just about the best film of that year. It was an actual film (said in the snobby way of a world cinema fan, I admit) vs a comic book movie. Still, I will see the third..just like any further Hellboys.
