Anyone here know anything about Water Softeners?
I need to get one, the water in Vegas sucks ass... should I go with a sodium or potassium one?

Warning man, just do not let it go to soft. OMG that sucked having soft water. Felt like you always had soap on your skin when you were in the shower or tub.
As for your question. Go with sodium, it is less prone to caking or build up than potassium. Otherwise they are pretty much identical. Unless of course potassium costs more than sodium for refills. I am almost also positive you can run potassium in a sodium unit and vice versa. Though I am sure most manufacturers would frown on it. I also have an issue health wise with potassium that may or not be founded on reality. Yet I have no health issues with sodium chloride.

One is table salt and one is plant fertilizer. Now which one do you possibly want to have all over your skin daily and also possibly drink? Go sodium and if your worried about house plants, use a water filter like you should with either one anyways.

i heard that vegas might be banning the sodium systems soon... because their treatment plant doesn't filter sodium or something and its contaminating the water

Also like I said I am pretty sure you can run either in a system, just ask someone who sells both at around the same price to see what they say. I would think though that a treatment plant would be more concerned with potassium over sodium. Specially since they have been really up in peoples business for lawn run off and such. Though who the fuck knows for sure. Hey dont they use potasium chloride in some form of execution?

Go with an Revers Osmosis system its made from a permeable membrane that is back flushed to remove crap from the water. The under sink units are just for drinking water and are not fast ( about 25 LTs a day) Im sure if money is no object you could get a whole house unit. The under sink units I have cost around $400 and have a few inline filters included like a resin filter and a charcoal filter to polish the water before drinking. They cost about $50 a year to maintain until you need a new membrane then it's an expensive replacement. Good luck
