      Darik's Boot 'n' Nuke.

I can't post URLs yet. It's the first Google result.
I no longer represent TrafficGigolos, please contact Justin or Rebecca with any issues.

            Delete files.

Copy files to hdd to fill all empty space.

            Delete files.

Copy files to hdd to fill all empty space.

            Repeat until bored.

Self appointed experts may think this is not perfect and definitive, but then again self appointed experts aren;t ever affraid of contradicting fundamental laws of physics.

Actually, I don't think you have magnets strong enough to destroy a hard drive, esp if manufactured after 1998 or so. At most it will confuse it temporarily.

Hammer works, but only if you actually damage the rolls.

Copy/delete cycles works w/o destroying hdd.

You MUST completely destroy the disk if you want to "get rid of everything". Simple.
Oh, and just hitting it with a hammer until it comes to pieces will not work. Best way = microwave.

Yes. It completely fry's all circuits...which is your intended outcome.

Did you not read anything above you? Formatting does nothing but prepare the disk for data to be written...it DOES NOT completely remove previous data from the disk. ALL DATA WHICH HAS EVER BEEN ON THAT DISK IS RECOVERABLE. I repeat...ALL DATA!

+1 for Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN), but be warned that using something like the Gutmann 35-Pass method can take the better part of an entire day depending on the size of the disk.
