    Kino Flo lighting anyone?

Any video producers using Kino Flo lighting?

I was in a shop yesterday, and I may go with Kino Flo, but what I do not fancy much is the fact that you have to get the lights pretty close to your set since they are fluorescents!

I love Kino Flo lights. It makes lighting things so easy AND doesnt make the set too hot (other lights bring up the temperature in the room pretty high)

Kinos are great but if you are used to traditional lighting they take some getting used to

You do not have to put them closer to your subject that is nonsense you use them as you would any other diffused lighting source.

second the daylight balanced bulbs tend to be a bit cool, I prefer warmer lighting so tweaking the color balance or applying a warming gel may produce better results for you

and finally it is a flat type of light, and that takes some getting used to, but as far as it goes the benefits FAR outweigh the the few disadvantages, the biggest benefit is that they run very very cool, they wont heat up your room. and they last a very long time.

Thanks guys......what should I go for to start? Two 4x4.....or will I need more?

I was thinking of getting four 4x4.....but that with the stands and tubes will bring me over $6K

Go with Diva-Lites if you're bouncing the lights off a ceiling. If you're using direct lighting, go with the big 4x4 banks they're softer. But I really wouldn't suggest direct lighting unless it's photography, then you'd be using strobes.

Kinos are the best. I use two four-foot four banks with daylight balanced bulbs as my main key and fill lights, supplemented by some additional lights for the background and hair lights.

The only aspect not smooth about it is loading all that gear, plus stands and cables and cameras and other misc equipment into my vehicle and unloading it and setting it all up on locations a few times every week! Thankfully I have a good assistant nowadays. :-)

I have 2 Diva 400's and 2 200 watt banks that I made myself. (These use a high frequency balast and work just as good as kinos with the same bulbs)

You can search my threads and find my home made kino post. They are really easy to build. I would say the kinos are definitely more durable but I keep the 200s at my studio and drag the Diva 400s around on the road. They can really take a beating.
