Every post in this thread has some truth to it. As a female, it's important to be well groomed and to do everything you can (and can afford) to look your best. But it's equally important to have ambition and dedication in your career, and do everything you can to improve your mind/self other ways as well. My best friend from college and I came up with a theory of having the "total package" when we were in school. The key is to balance both priorities, because when one becomes more important than the other, you lose out. But you're right this society only values girls who look good, and if you're that girl than you'll likely have a good life. If you're not that girl, well it's a lot tougher. Still, even an unattractive girl has it easier in some respect than unattractive guy (i.e. can still get laid, get a decent guy whenever they want), and vice versa (less expectation on men to look perfect in every day life).

True story:
My oldest sister has always prided herself on her looks. She was always the pretty one in the family, but it always took a lot of effort to get that way. And even though she is a very kind, giving and loving person, she seems to feel that her looks are all that she has to offer. And yes, she is very pretty, but even I have to admit that she looks much better with her make-up on.
When she got married, she got up every morning a couple of hours before her husband for OVER TWO YEARS so that she would be all perfect looking for him before he woke up. No joke... she would not even let her own husband see her without her face painted on and her hair done for over two years! I SO wish I could have been there to see his reaction on the day when he finally got to see her in her natural state. The difference is truly night and day.
Still to this day, after 18 years of marriage, she's so high maintenance that she won't even run to the corner store for milk or drop her kids off at school unless she's perfectly done up first. Her boys are always late to school because of her. She's also the type of person who will never go swimming or ride on the back of a motorcycle or in a convertible because it would mess up her hair or face.
