Neighbor asked me to help him jumpstart his car. Told him to fuck off.
Helping someone to jumpstart their car is a great way to fuck up your alternator, fuses, and half your electrical system. Only idiots help people jumpstart cars. There's a reason AAA exists. If they can't afford $49/year, then fuck them. |

I know a guy who did over $2,200 of electrical system damage to his rather old BMW by helping jumpstart some dude's car. | |

				 | huh? depends how you jumpstart. With your key in and motor running, sure, you can fuck up your alternator cos the normal 14V reading will spike to 28V when the other car starts. However with your engine off and key out, it cannot affect your electrics or alternator at all - you can't kill something that isn't electrically connected.... I don't mind jumpstarting others, but they get two shots to start their motor - after that, all bets are off.

				 | while we're on this subject, can someone explain what difference it makes if you connect the negative terminal to the hotstarting chassis or the -ve of the battery? I always connect to the chassis, but my current owners manual says the -ve battery terminal. The order of connecting is important too - I can never remember, so I have it written on my cables!! But yeah, I've hotstarted about 15 times others cars (half of those being the wifes, of course) and never had any prob.

Don't worry, there will be an investigation if they don't find any soot in your lungs; let's hope that they get the jump start figured out.

				 | BMW urges drivers not to help jumpstart cars. I called and asked their corporate why one time and they said it's just policy due to electrical failure issues as per the customers idiocy (not in such crude words of course). |

				 | Yea, was about to say, why jump start when you can help him push start it? If he says an automatic you can say "hurray for you for buying a car that costs more to buy, costs more to maintain, costs more in gas AND you can't push start it if your battery dies..."

				 | I think it's just the point. i have always helped others jump start their cars because I believe in karma and doing right. If I am in that situation, I would want someone to help me! I had someone help me go get a new tire on Thanksgiving one time quite a few years back and I was stranded going to see my parents. It was very nice of them, took an hour of their time and they just wanted to go enjoy their Thanksgiving! No I didn't have AAA, I didn't even think about things like that at 19. I try to help others now when they need it.
