South Carolina plans license plate for Christians

Quote:
COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) -- Unless a federal court intervenes, South Carolina drivers may soon be able to profess their Christian faith with a state-issued license plate.

auer has offered to personally pay a $4,000 deposit required for the Department of Motor Vehicles to begin producing the plates. The fee would be returned to him later.

The Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said Bauer's willingness to pay the deposit "more deeply confirms this is a government-sponsored program."

"I don't believe that these license plates will ever be on any car in South Carolina, because I think our Constitutional claim is so strong," Lynn said.

South Carolina's legislature has not made a similar specialty plate available for any other faith, he said.

While individuals can ask the DMV to print plates for other faiths -- for a $4,000 fee -- the request would be subject to significant limits and rules not imposed for the Christian plate. Other tags could feature a religious symbol -- such as the Star of David -- but no words would be allowed.

Here in Oregon there was a case where a woman sued so she could get a vanity plate that said 'pray' and she lost. If contested I can't imagine this will happen.

She lost, because as a woman driver, this was already implied.

If people want to profess their faith on their license plates, I say let 'em. But then, I'd also say, if they want to tattoo their faith on the foreheads, I say let 'em. Hell, if they're drunk, I say encourage them, so they won't "forget" to do it once they sober up!

I do think it's strange, though, that they would put additional rules/limitations on other faiths. Lame.

I fully 100% support this measure. As a matter of fact, I want to sponsor this in California.

Now I will know who to stay away from on the road. Everyone knows the most dangerous time to drive is during the church commute when idiot Christians are all over the road. Those are most reckless and arrogant drivers ever, and I want to single them out so I can cut them off before they nearly run me off the road every day.

A friend of mine and his wife are very religious. They are so religous they go to church multiple times a week and both teach Sunday school ect. So I am up visiting them a few years ago (they live about 10 hours away from me) and we go see a movie. After the movie we hit a fast food place and get some food to go. As we are driving home we start eating (it is late and we are all hungry) my buddy is driving, his wife is in the passenger seat and I am in back. He actually closes his eyes and bows his head to pray while driving down the road. I ask him what he is doing and he says, "saying grace." I say,"How about watching the road?" He says, "No worries, God has my back." I was shocked. He does this all the time. He will feel the need and while driving down the road will close his eyes and start to pray.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if the government didn't have to incur any of the costs and it was open to all faiths. But unfortunately, taxpayers will have to foot the bill for it and is no different than state-sponsored religion.

It's kind of sad that people need to have a license plate to show their faith. How insecure could you possibly be. This country is so ass backwards sometimes with people still living in the 1800's.

This is all good, and i don't have any problems with the first part. But, in the second part, i disagree with the statement "should be devoid of religion" - since this is not what the First Amendment says.

:First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

To state that ONLY NON-RELIGIOUS custom plates can be available would ABRIDGE the rights afforded citizens under this amendment. There is NOTHING in the First Amendment that states "Sepperation of Church & State" - that theory comes only from the writings of Thomas Jefferson - its certainly not in the constitution.

To deny access to specified types of plates would be discriminatory. Therefore, all forms of plates should be available - or none.

Just equal protection! Thats what the constitution was created to provide.

When you deny one group - you set yourself up to be denied at some point down the road cause 'what's good for the goose, is good for the gander!'

It also doesn't say the government is required to aid you in your freedom of speech. In this case it sounds like this group would pay for the initial cost of setting up the plates then, in theory, the plates would pay for themselves as people bought them. But the government isn't required to facilitate that freedom of speech. What is next? Should I be allowed to pay extra to have a custom drivers license? Should the white house be forced to fly a banner promoting a company just because the company is willing to pay for the banner and cost to put it in place?

IMO all license plates should be one color and one style per state that way they are easily recognized and identified. If you want to let everyone on the road know you love the baby Jesus, fly a bumper sticker next to your plate or buy a plate frame that says so. There should be no laws that limit freedom of speech, but the government shouldn't be forced to participate in someones exercising of that freedom just because that person is willing to pay for it.

Agreed, and thats basically my point. But currently you can get one type, and not the other. Thats why I don't see how (if no cost is paid by the state) that this can't/won't be done, because it would be discriminatory to deny one group.

But you are right - plates should be uniform and basic as they are for the purpose of identification.

I agree if they were to open it up it should be for everyone. If these people pick up the tab and get their custom plate then anyone else should be allowed to go get a plate for whatever it is they want to promote/support as long as I pay to have it done and somehow I don't think that will happen. It the church of satan wants a license plate something tells me they will be denied.

I actually told him I won't ride in a car with him if he is going to do that shit. He kind of got offended, but I don't care. I'm not riding with someone that things God is driving their car.
