Movie: "GONZO" a film about Hunter S. Thompson set for July 4th.

How perfectly fitting for this true Patriot.....this hero of journalism & literature.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/magnolia/gonzo/hd/

Watch the trailer in 1080

And be sure to hit the theaters to see a film about one of the true great Americans of our century.

yup...in fact I'm turning this thread into a HST picture post because most people here have a 5 second attention span....pictures HELP to keep their attention

those of you who know him....most definitely like him....i don't think anyone disliked HST...besides maybe the political figures he attacked on a daily basis

for those of you who don't know who hunter s. thompson was....he created "Gonzo Journalism", was the basis of many films such as "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (played by johnny depp)"...."Where the Buffalo Roam (played by bill murray)" amongst others. Was the author of such books as "Hell's Angels" (for which he gained critical acclaim, living with actual Hell's Angels & almost dying from a beating received by them)...he was a featured writer for Rolling Stone for decades & several sports magazines/sports news shows as well.....He was arguably one of the most influential Journalist & writers during 1970-2005)....he is one of the most "little known" and "most famous" writers of all time

My favorite line from H.S.T.

(When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.)

1977

1980-something next to some Ducati's

In one of his last interviews before he died, for the documentary "FUCK"

Yup Bill Murrary got so "into" character for (wtbr)....he was almost fired from Saturday Night Live.

Apparently he was acting so much like HST, he pissed off all his fellow cast members.

Hunter S. Thompson was the one writer whose every book and article I ever read made me hurt from laughter, while also communicating truths that changed my outlook on life...

I had the opportunity to meet HST once, when I invited him to my college campus to speak. I was the Chairperson of the Forums and Lectures committee, and had brought over a dozen famous people to campus, but none drew a larger turnout than Hunter Thompson.

His lecture was scheduled for a Monday night. I remember because in accordance with his wishes, the announced time for the event to start was "at the conclusion of Monday Night Football", meaning he would be taking the stage at around 9pm.

So at this odd time, on an off-night, HST finally sauntered out wearing his trademark poker visor, with his cigarette holder sticking out of his mouth at an angle. He proceeded to sit down at the table provided for him and poured himself a glass of Wild Turkey Whiskey (it was in his contract rider). After taking a sip, he picked up the microphone, and instead of giving a speech, simply asked "so what do you want to know?"

For nearly two hours, until the fifth of Wild Turkey was polished off, he delighted the audience with a hilarious series of tales and observations. He signaled the end of the lecture by picking up a pitcher of ice water, removing his visor and then pouring the water over his head (I was happy that I had him autograph my half-dozen HST books back in the green room prior to that).

It sounds like the upcoming movie about his incredible life should be great...

So it's a rare goddamn trip for a locked-in, rent-paying writer to get into a gig that, even in retrospect, was a kinghell, highlife fucking from start to finish... and then to actually get paid for writing this kind of manic gibberish seems genuinely weird; like getting paid for kicking Agnew in the balls. So maybe there's hope. Or maybe I'm going mad...

In a nation ruled by swine, all pigs are upward mobile ? and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: Not necessarily to Win, but mainly to keep from Losing Completely...

The Swine are gearing down for a serious workout this time around... So much, then, for The Road ? and for the last possibilities of running amok in Las Vegas... Well, at least, I'll know I was there, neck deep in the madness, before the deal went down, and I got so high and wild that I felt like a two-ton Manta Ray jumping all the way across the Bay of Bengal.

It makes me really happy to see some of the most successful people in this business posting in this thread. He mad some big changes in a lot of peoples lives here.

His ability to connect with free thinkers....was well....seriously impressive. Republicans, democrats/independents/freaks..it didn't matter. Those who thought for themselves & weren't part of any "group think" always found there way to H.S.T's work.

I dare say every successful person (especially entrepreneurs) I've ever known was in some way inspired by Hunter's work.

Fucking beautiful

"As your attorney, I advise you to panic."

If there was ever a better combination than Thompson's writing and Ralph Steadman's art, I haven't seen it. No movie or other depiction has ever captured the true Thompson spirit the way Steadman's art does, IMO.

In addition to several books autographed by HST, I have a book that Ralph Steadman wrote, titled "The Grapes of Ralph", which Steadman autographed for me by dipping his finger in wine and then signing the book (my wife and I attended a lecture by Steadman, and then were lucky enough to have dinner with him and a small group of people afterwards).

I read Steadman's book 'The Joke's Over' recently, was definitely cool and gave a new perspective on their crazy collaborations.

One of my fave pieces of HST writing, seems like so long ago now:

"We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time."

Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history -- which is no doubt true -- but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a war-time economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed.

That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks. The time has come for loyal Americans to Sacrifice. ... Sacrifice. ... Sacrifice. That is the new buzz-word in Washington. But what it means is not entirely clear. "

He was a very intelligent man

Yeah I have 4 Steadman's of HST plus one of William Burroughs which is REALLY amazing, a signed copy of "Fear and Loathing" and a "Where the Buffalo Roam" poster. All in the media room. Probably pick up some more stuff over time.

Judging by the trailer, I have a strong feeling that this is going to be very much like the book that came out a few months ago titled "Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson, An Oral Biography" which was quite good so this should be a good companion, although more than likely have much of the same information. Regardless, I am always happy to absorb more information on my favourite author.
For those inclined to learn about HST I recomend reading "Fear and Loathing: The Strange and Terrible Saga of Hunter S. Thompson" by Paul Perry. He goes pretty in depth with his research and covers a shit load. Probably not for the casual fan though.

Let's not let this over shadow the film adaptation of The Rum Diary. I have been waiting for that for at least 3 years and it looks like it is finally going to come out in 2009.
