Hybrids are Bull Shit

In 1977 VW made cars that got over 50+ miles per gallon, now 30 years later, we're suppose to be impressed with cars that get 35? WTF? How much are these car companies getting paid to not make efficient cars? It sucks that this is what commerce and government is doing to us! We should have 100+MPG suv's by now!

it was also a gross polluter. Skin cancer from no ozone or more mileage. Pick one, you can't have both.

When I was 16 or 17, my mom had a VW diesel rabbit that got 40 MPG. I think it was about a 1983 model.

Yeah totally agree.

And when the president wants fuel efficiency standards that are 40 years old within the next 10 years, it's NOT helpful. It's effectively permission to keep your shit the same for another few years then declare chapter 11.

Diesel technology has improved 20 fold since then, whens the last time you saw a bunch of black smoke come out of a big rig?

In 1977 was there dual zone air-conditioning, heated seats, CD and DVD players, etc?

I was always under the impression that those took a toll on fuel economy?

The all ones, sure...

It's kind of funny... when I lived in San Diego, large population, I didn't really notice the smell of exhaust all that often. Now that I moved back to a small town, I notice the smell of exhaust all the time. I don't know if I'm just crazy or if there is that much of a difference between older cars (here) and newer cars (San Diego).

VW re released the Old style Bug here in Mexico in 1999 and they get, and got 35MPG.

Lucky for us, we are only paying 2.56 per gallon.

Diesel pollutes a lot more. Motorcycles get way better gas mileage but they put out more bad stuff for the environment for the same distance traveled because they do not have the exhaust filtering systems.

gotta be all the enviromental crap stuff into cars that caused the mpg drop. I say that because cars these days are made of much lighter materials, are much more aerodynamic, and one would think that technology has progressed at least a little.

Would be nice if my suv got way better than 19-20 mpg... or if gas was under 2 bucks a gallon... either would be swell.

Hydrogen and biodiesel are the future imo. My youngest brother drives a 2007 4wd gmc sierra 2500 with the duramax engine, he gets 22mpg no problem and he runs 33 inch tires. For the last year he's been running biodiesel for roughly $1 a gallon. Of course the initial investment to be able to mix his own biodiesel ran him a few grand but he's still saving money. I bring this up because I find myself wondering what kind of mileage a small car would get? Imagine being able to run biodiesel in your Honda for $1 a gallon!

It is more likely you are used to fresher air now and notice the crap coming out of people's tail pipes when you encounter it. In SD the air is always full of pollutants so you were used to it.

Unfortunately you are right; most current hybrids are a crock. I REALLY wanted to believe in them, but they are far from saving the earth, as some people believe.

However, i will say this: in order for the technology to advance, the early stages have to happen. It's like a lot of things; the first models are usually not as good as the following generations.

Also, electric vehicles are better than other vehicles, but when they are pulling in power from fossil fuels, they don't have a "zero carbon footprint", like some want to believe.

I'm an admitted green freak too, so I consume information about these things ravenously, and while I want to believe in them, I know that over hype that can be proved incorrect is damaging to the cause.

Hummers are an extreme though. Any car that gets better mileage than hummer is a better alternative economically and enviornmentally, but the advantage of getting a hybrid that adds an extra 4-5 miles to the gallon (10 mpg added is good) or a similiar model, is minimal.

that's pretty awesome, in theory. It looks like a smart car, sort of.

And yes, it's a start, and we have to start somewhere. I just wish they would have started long ago, instead of killing progress for oil profit.

LOL!

There must be some secret group of people that real these fantasy car stories every few months or so. Then occasionally build one for a car show. These cars never have and never will get produced. I have been seeing bullshit stories like this for 20 years and they are always supposed to get made in under 5 years.

True, an all electric car recharging off the grid is burning whatever kind of power in their area. Lot of area is mostly coal, some is mostly water, most are a mix which on average, is cheaper to charge a car from than using gas. But it still adds up to a savings. And the longer you own an all electric, the more it pays off. Also, pollution where we live and drive will be drastically reduced since the tailpipe...... there isn't one.

Throw your own solar array into the mix and a few batteries, and you have an overnight or afternoon charger for free. Now you get to calculate both the amount you are saving in electricity from the grid, and the amount of gasoline you'll never burn.

Buying solar by the way is one of the soundest investments there is. For one thing, how many here believe their cost of electricity is never going to go up, ever again? Of course it's going to go up. Buying a bulk of solar for your home LOCKS IN the cost of your electricity to the amount of your initial outlay! It's a 100% guaranteed payoff. You absolutely can not lose money barring a natural disaster. There are not many opportunities out there that can say that.

until a few years ago there was no incentive for manufacturers to make cars with high mils per gallon and that can be seen with all the SUVs that were made.
everyone thought that oil would last forever and no one cared about the issue cause gasoline was a 1.50 a gallon so they made them big and with powerful engines.
governments didn't care because it created jobs which meant happy people who will vote happily for the people in office since everything was sooo fucken good.
now as in the early 80's gas prices are up and the incentives are coming back to make high mileage cars.
as far as Hybrids I think they are bullshit because you will never save enough in gas over the life of the car to make the difference in price between regular engine and a hybrid one.

The Tesla Roadster is an all electric sports car, with a partial design by lotus. It's an awesome car, but hard to come by, and has a sticker starting at around $85k. You also have to live close enough to a dealer to have it serviced there, and there are only a handful of them.

Solar is a great way to go, because they impact of converting it into energy is minimal. There are some places that will actually let you sell power back to the electric company using solar.

I've got a solar power charger for my phone on order actually, lol.

There is no tailpipe in an electric car, but there is a smokestack a few miles away kicking off coal fumes that are worse than gas emissions in a lot of cases.

I bring this up because I find myself wondering what kind of mileage a small car would get? Imagine being able to run biodiesel in your Honda for $1 a gallon!
Do you know how they produce biodisel? You understand it competes _DIRECTLY_ with our food right?

You understand farmers will switch their crops to fuel vehicles and not people, right? You understand they are already doing this, right?

You also understand the more the demand for bio diesel goes up, the higher prices we pay for food right?

Sourcing fuel for our economy from the same commodities we eat is a _FUCKING HORRIBLE IDEA_ no matter how you look at it. People throw common sense out of the window when these environmentalist idiots come out praising these new technologies without thinking of the impact.

Go ahead, pour that bio diesel into your vehicle. And when you are crying in 10 years that a loaf of bread costs 50 dollars because your stomach and gastank are competing for the same resources, don't wonder why.

The energy crisis is a myth, global warming is a myth. You want to save the world? Invest in and promote nuclear energy. Invest in and promote solar energy. Don't promote a fuel that competes with what you eat. This isn't Back to the Future, we can't feed our cars garbage (yet). But if you keep promoting biodisel you'll be eating garabage because the price of staple grains will shoot up so high you'll be paying 30 for breakfast at Denny's because bread costs so much.

Pull your heads out of your asses and stop letting the oil companies soak you. We all see the profits they are making, and we're watching fuel prices RISE like fucking nuts. But we leave the oil companies alone and look for _STUPID_ solutions like bio diesel. Why? because we all believe we have no choice but to pay for gasoline. Can't live without a car, too proud to take the bus, whatever. You stop buying fuel, the price will drop. It's that simple. It will never happen, but that's all it will take. Switching to things like biodiesel will only make things worse.

So, enjoy that $1 per gallon when you are enjoying $10 for a loaf of bread, $20 for a gallon of milk, $10 for a lbs of ground beef, etc... (What did you think cows ate? Environmentalists? Propane?)

Thanks for saving the world, biodiesel!

yeah, biodiesel isn't the way to go either. It's a good alternative for remote areas, but it's not the answer.

There are a lot of predictions though that the future will show need for multiple different sources of fuel. There are a lot of underused subsidized farms that could be put to use for this.

Hydrogen would be a much better way to go than biodiesel, but really, you can't discount too many fuel alternatives. The more alternatives we have, the more inspired the development for a fossil fuel replacement will be.

If you guys haven't checked out "Big Ideas for a small planet", you should. It's not entirely accurate, but then again, what is?

You guys ever heard about VW Golf TwinDrive? The one that is charging from a socket and is capable of driving up to 50km in the urban area on batteries? Then it starts the diesel engine that is quite economical?

I've heard little bits about it. It's only in the concept stages right now, Like the Ford Model 'H', I believe. They have a few coming out in about 2 years as a test, but the Chevy Volt is actually supposed to be consumer ready by then.

Please check out the documentary who killed the electric car.

Hydrogen is not a viable option.

GM are fucking dumb. They had the lead on the Electric car but decided to blow it.

Hybrids sucks is true let me explain

The battery charges while breaking if you dont break theres no battery charging thus the car runs fully on fuel..

Now inmagine you driving on the highway no breaking running fully on fuel.. Now your shit ass car has to carry an extra 500kg of battery weight and electronics making it less economic then a car without hybrid..

Conclusion Hybrid only saves for short city drives, but who uses a car for that?
