Best mechanic ever: Ohio man tunes Ford Mustang to produce 400 horsepower and return

With gas prices setting record highs nearly every day, many Americans are being forced to trade in their performance cars and large trucks and SUVs due the high price of a fill up. But one Ohio man’s invention could be setting the stage for a V8 return.

Napoleon, Ohio’s Doug Pelmear claims that he has created a V8-powered 1987 Ford Mustang that develops 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque on E85, can accelerate from 0-60 in about three seconds – on its way to a top speed of 180 mph – and still returns an astonishing 110 mpg.

Although a 400 horsepower economy car sounds too good to be true, Toledo’s Rocket Ventures, a subsidiary of the Regional Growth Partnership, has verified Pelmear’s claim, according to OzarksFirst.com.

Pelmear has yet to reveal what’s exactly under the hood of his Mustang – as he’s still waiting on a few patents – but says his work is based off the work of his grandfather who developed fuel-saving techniques during the 1940s.

Pelmear has even entered his car into the Progressive Automotive X Prize, one of the world’s foremost green car competitions that challenges contestants to “design viable, clean and super-efficient cars that people want to buy.” If you ask us, the judges should just hand over the $10 million grand prize to Pelmear right now.

this does sound a little extreme.... so all the brightest engineers working for all of the biggest manufacturers are missing something that is that huge??

these kinds of stories have been coming out for decades, never seem to amount to anything

if it's true though, the effects on the entire world's economy are hinging on some dude in Ohio, guess we can always hope

There are all sorts of technologies that we don't know about, and the reason we don't is often because of cost. Engineers are often limited in what they can really do because of cost.

This specific car may or may not get 110 mpg... but what's going to hold it back is the cost of getting it set up. If it costs $100,000... right now it wouldn't make sense. But as prices rise for energy and the cost of implementing the system drops, it could become quite feasible.

lies. Why is it always some garage mechanic who is "waiting on some patents" . If this had an ounce of truth, car companies, oil companies, etc would be all over it. A car as fuel efficient as this is a threat to no one. There would be MORE cars on the road and the oil economy would have a new life if there were cost effective cars getting 110mpg.

I was happy with my 88 mustang GT cobra block, .40 over 350 horse at the rear wheels that got 32mpg highway. But that was due to 3.08 rear gears and overdrive in 5th gear. You could get on a nice long trip with it, set the cruise at 71 mph and if you stayed on a flat level road I would get 30 to 32mpg. My dad doubted me till I took him on a hour long ride with it. And sure enough hit 32mpg.

Will be awesome to see how this guy did this.

Why would car and oil companies suddenly be all over 110 mpg when they have been neglecting 30-40 mpg solutions for years?

Sometimes the best inventions come from idiots in their garage.

think about that

You can get a 100% electric today that has a range of 100 miles, can charge in 10 minutes (or 5 hour normal AC) and you dont have to ruin perfectly good corn to make the fuel.

But for gearheads and such, it's nice to see someone make a car able to burn rubber and scare the neighborhood kids with 400 hp! hehehe

anthing thats progressing the technology of fuel from food should be a threat to everyone if you ask me. well be screwed if the entire nation switches to e85. such a bad solution to our problems... i did some math before, and we don't even have enough farm land (thats including the farm land we need for food) to meet todays fuel demand if we swtich to ethanol, think relying on other nations for fuel is bad, what happens when we have to rely on other nations for fuel AND food...

The big business bastards will pay tons to keep such inventions OFF the market. Let's face it, the whole patent scam is a, um...scam?
