San Francisco/bay area -- restaurant recommendations?

Some friends of mine are headed to the bay area to celebrate their 20th anniversary, and they're in search of a nice restaurant -- price is not an issue.

Anybody familiar with the area have any suggestions?

They've got pretty broad tastes, really. Some things they don't like include Indian food (I know... they are insane for that), and they're not real big on Middle Eastern. I'd say French, Italian and 'modern American' cuisine are top of their list.

Hey Q! Be sure to check out The Waterbar on the water! It's pretty new. I just read a nice review about it in this month's Town & Country magazine.

http://www.opentable.com/rest_profile.aspx?rid=17035

The view is gorgeous and the food is exceptional!

If they want French, then I recommend Fleur de Lys.

For Seafood, I recommend Farallon.

If they want a romantic restaurant with great views (and price is not a factor), then The Carnelian Room is quite nice.

North Beach has tons of great Italian Restaurants, and Fisherman's Wharf has good surf and turf with great views.

San Francisco is a city with a reputation for many 5-Star restaurants.

Bon apetit,

Waterbar http://www.waterbarsf.com/
Sinbads http://www.sinbadsrestaurant.com/
The Waterfront http://waterfrontsf.com/
Aqua http://www.aqua-sf.com/aqua/

all very nice restaraunts, good food im sure

but if you guys want EXCELLENT chinese food and don't are about the atmosphere then you HAVE to go here http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel...king-BR-1.html

there is always a line outside of the door, the food is excellent and its nice little hole in the wall joint... sometimes you end up sitting next to people you dont even know

that place is a must for me everytime i go back home to sf

Cafe Jacqueline - consistently ranks as one of the best restaurants in SF. I went there and I now understand why. If price is not an issue, thhis is the place to go (if you like French).

Good steak and seafood with a view: Cliff House

Great Italian food, Fior d' Ialtia - oldest Italian restaurant in the US.

Another good restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf is The Franciscan Steak, seafood, pasta, nice selection.

Far East Cafe in Chinatown has been there since 1920 and has a wide variety of great food.

Michael Mina is in a class of his own as a Chef. The Lobster Pot Pie is incredible. I've been to several of his restaurants. Excellent dining everytime, and a great wine list (they will also set up wine pairing if your friends are unsure what to order).

A few people also recommended Aqua, which would also be a wonderful pick...

If they like the 'bar scene' there's a great Irish bar in San Mateo right off of the exit on East 2nd. Can't remember the name, though. It's like 2 blocks past the Jack and the box, and one block north of the BofA building.

If they are heading up to wine country and can get a reservation (lunch may be easier to get into) check out www.frenchlaundry.com.
