Something to keep in mind for type ins is if affiliate codes are overwritten when the surfer returns, which is a possibility. Ours aren't like that but I have seen some that are.

That being said we'll always watermark our content. The branding and protection aspect is huge. I'd imagine with Kink's quality that anything they have not watermarked is stolen and used to promote other inferior content.

amen! :thumbsup

What if the affiliate re-watermarks every video on the fly on his site, it might get messy, but that might be a solution to the legit affiliate sites that are using content to promote the sponsors as intended.

Either you don't want watermarks then all the tube sites and torrents steal the content and the content owner gets nothing from it causing the industry to slide more downhill, or they do put a watermark and hope if it gets stolen at least they thief may come check out the site.

You can't have it both ways.

THE SKY IS FALLING, but we don't want anyone to try to fix it.

Piss off.

Mine was still funnier.

a thread about watermarks and no donnie long references? wtf

Kinky Dollars 07-02-2008 07:02 PM

We added the calls to action a few weeks ago because we had upgraded our encoding technology and wanted to promote the enhanced video quality. We have always watermarked our content because our content is often stolen and posted all over the internet (and pirated for illegal DVDs). Every major producer does this, and this cannot change.

We certainly did not intend to decrease our affiliates' revenue.

We want to set the cookie at the gallery level, but this requires code that we believe will not be accepted by TGP's. I would love to hear comments from TGP site owners on this issue. Is there a way to set the cookie at the gallery level that is acceptable to the TGPs?

In the meantime, we are removing the calls to action as a result of this thread. Thanks for your patience.

Cheers,

John Sander

Maybe we should take off our watermarks, host it for you, AND pay you just for trying to send sales. :thumbsup

A watermark of site name or url of site being promoted is not an issue and is less likely to generate a type in causing you to lose the sale as the surfer knows the clickable link takes him to the same place so he's more likely to click as he's lazy by nature.

What you should be bitching about is those sponsors whom deliberately and intentionally steal your sales by purposefully attracting type ins where you're promoting somefuckingprogramspaysite.com but the watermark says goehere.com instead of the site you're promoting.. The sufer has become accustomed and trained to type in urls as seen on flash videos and has a natural curiosity.. why would he click link to somefuckingprogramspaysite.com when the watermark says goehere.com? He may think goehere.com has more free videos for him to watch.. he may think the content he wants is on goehere.com and not somefuckingprogramspaysite.com so he types it in rather than clicking your link.. You get NOTHING when he joins goehere.com. This is a deliberate and calculated move by affiliate programs further exploit YOUR traffic and any rep who tells you that it does not generate type ins or that they're only protecting their content are simply fucking lying to you. Afterall, look at how many type ins tube sites generate.. That's why these programs put their clips on them.. These tubesites and sites utilizing embeds of flv files are the ones whom trained surfers to type in urls seen on watermarks.

Never worry about a watermark that's of actual site you're promoting as surfer is intelligent and is more likely to click the link than type in as he knows they both go to the same place.. The real one to worry about is when watermark is different as surfer is naturally curious and programs are exploiting this and KNOWINGLY stealing your joins utilizing this method!

KUDO :thumbsup

So true it was posted twice :1orglaugh
Seriously though, you're spot on with that. There's a certain very popular sponsors who pulls that stuff (and has been for a long time) and nobody seemed to care. But when Kink dares to make their mark a little more visible by golly then that's a major offense....

You could offer a second version where the cookie is set. one where it is not.

BlackCrayon 08-09-2008 11:02 AM

I don't get why sponsors fear tube sites ripping of the fhg vids. Aren't tube sites looking for much longer movies?

klaze 08-09-2008 11:03 AM

Who the fuck is going to type a link when they could just click it?

brandonstills 08-09-2008 11:50 AM

I don't see anything with watermarking your content. It's pretty standard and a necessity.

Exactly... what the surfer is going to be evil and say HA, I'm not going to let you have the affiliate sale so I'm going to switch browsers and type in the URL manually?

Surfers don't think like that. If anything they might type in the url in the watermark thinking they'll get more free videos.
