He is quite wrong. I have spent a couple grand for speeding tickets on the 5. "Technically" had my license suspended, although I worked the system pretty well on that one.

I got a radar detector that I now use on all road trips. It has saved me a ton.

Ayla_SquareTurtle 07-01-2008 11:30 AM

I think they should outlaw texting... not while driving, just completely. Drives me fucking nuts and is a waste of time.

DefaultMan 07-01-2008 11:30 AM

Thanks for all the great advice baddog. I should have hit you up as soon as I moved to LA. :thumbsup:thumbsup

Q: Does the new ?hands-free? law allow drivers 18 and over to text message while driving?

A: The law does not specifically prohibit that, but an officer can pull over and issue a citation to a driver of any age if, in the officer?s opinion, the driver was distracted and not operating the vehicle safely. Sending text messages while driving is unsafe at any speed and is strongly discouraged.

The problem is, as an officer, how do you differentiate between someone scrolling through the contacts, dialing a number or texting? This is why they can not ticket you for texting because they can not prove that is what you were doing when they pulled you over.

:2 cents:

wow, they don't fuck around...

if you become a hazard to the road you can be pulled over for any number of distractions. but legally having the phone in your hand and texting is not illegal. personally i think its 10 times more dangerous to text than talk.

dav3 07-01-2008 12:23 PM

only 3 miles above the speed limit!?

wow thats some ball busting

Tam 07-01-2008 12:30 PM

They REALLY need to pass that cell phone law in the redneck hell I live in. I swear, putting a cellphone and a car in a redneck's hands at the same time is nothing but a recipe for total disaster. :Oh crap

Everytime I leave the house I dodge at least 10 rednecks trying to figure out how the hell to keep their cars on the road while taking those all important calls that can't wait..... probably where they are all going to meet to party that night, or who they are going to beat up. lmao

Ditto! and they create most of the traffic jam! :disgust

Beaver Bob 07-01-2008 12:34 PM

aside from the 3 miles over the speed limit thing, I think those are some pretty good laws.

brandonstills 07-01-2008 12:58 PM

Great. So instead of talking and looking at the road they will be texting and NOT looking at the road.

Nikki_Licks 07-01-2008 01:59 PM

At least someone is trying to do something about idiot drivers. Now we need to have the same laws here in Phoenix.

Good for California :thumbsup

jalami 07-01-2008 03:31 PM

Holy shit.. if the fines were the same here, I just racked up $3,878 in fines getting to the office this morning :P

you really think LEO is going to put an end to the 80 in the 65?

V_RocKs 07-01-2008 04:39 PM

I rarely see anyone who is on the cell phone getting into an accident.

I also believe that the ratio of being on the phone to not being on the phone is probably pretty close to being the same.

Some people just cannot drive for shit.

SexualDragon 07-01-2008 04:47 PM

holy stricktness

tony286 07-01-2008 04:49 PM

i wish they would do the handsfree in atl.

Rand 07-01-2008 05:15 PM

I for one agree with this new cell phone rule. I can't tell you how many close calls I've had because someone was "trying" to drive a car while having a conversation on the phone. Some people just don't have enough brain to do both at the same time.

I have an idea for a new law though.......
For each new law that needs to be passed, government must remove five others from the books.

Wouldn't that start to put an importance to things?

A law signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last year will be strictly enforced to all drivers in California, starting July 1st, here are the details with the violation fines.

* Carpool lane ? 1st time $1068.50 starting 7/1/08 (The $271 posted on the highway is out-dated)
Don?t do it again because 2nd time is going to be double. 3rd time, triple, and 4th time license suspended.
* Incorrect lane change ? $380. Don?t cross the lane on solid lines or at intersections.
* Block intersection ? $485
* Driving on the shoulder ? $450
* Cell phone use in the construction zone. ? Double fine (2 times $285) as of 07/01/08.
* All Cell phones must be ?hands free? while driving Fine is $285.
* Passengers over 18 not in their seatbelts ?- both passengers and
drivers get tickets
* Speeders ? allowance only drive 3 miles above the limit.

* DUI (Driving Under Influence of drug or alcohol) = JAIL (Stays on your driving record for 10 years!)
* teens to put down all cell phones and other electronic devices while driving. The new law prohibits drivers under age 18 from using any cell phone or other ?mobile-service device? while driving, even if it is equipped with a hands-free device.
The term ?mobile-service device? includes, but isn?t limited to, a broadband personal-communication device, specialized mobile radio device, handheld device or laptop computer with mobile-data access, pager, and two-way messaging device. Teen drivers ticketed for a violation will be subject to a fine of at least $70 (base fine plus penalties) for a first offense and at least $175 (base fine plus penalties) for subsequent offenses. Unlike the ban on handheld cell phones, a law enforcement officer may cite a teen for a suspected violation of this law only in connection with another suspected driving offense.

Arnt quite a few of those either exagerated or out right fake? Seriously do you think the state would say you can drive any speed over the speed limit at all? If it is posted 65 and your driving 66 thats illegal, end of story.

After Shock Media 07-01-2008 05:21 PM

Nevermind. Just saw the post where you mentioned it was not all true.

I guess it's not that bad. New York State was the first to pass the hands free law.

He lives in CA. We have a lot of laws in CA. They are always adding new ones, rarely removing.

are you not reading the information presented here? http://www.dmv.ca.gov/cellularphonelaws/index.htm

if a person is not operating their vehicle safely a officer can issue a citation.
