DHS? Customs Grabbing Digital Media
Code:
Washington, D.C. Agents searched Hogan?s luggage and then popped an unexpected question: Was he carrying any digital media cards or drives in his pockets? ?Then they told me that they were impounding my laptop,? says Hogan, a freelance investigative reporter whose recent stories have ranged from the origins of the Iraq war to the impact of money in presidential politics. Shaken by the encounter, Hogan says he left the airport and examined his bags, finding that the agents had also removed and inspected the memory card from his digital camera. |

This is good reason to have a travel laptop. Use like Gmail to get your mail. And then ghost your hd and have it server side or just have files you need on your server. Do not travel through customs with any fucking data. You are at their mercy and they can fuck with you in so many ways it is not even funny.
some may go so far as getting themselves one of those printers that print out the magnetic strip on back of your credit cards and debit cards, and also a reader. Then just print that shit on some useless crap like a store membership card or travel with the damn printer. Even though I do not use an epass card, I would hate to have wallet searched and have them find a debit card labeled sir fuck a lot or some shit. Ok maybe I am paranoid.

That's pretty gnarly... I've made it a paranoid habit to travel with basically nothing on my lappie but files I'm currently working on, but going to become even more of a habit now. I was stopped and called out for a secondary search returning home from phoenix, the guys we're getting a kick out of some of the shit they we're finding in my bag after letting them know I worked in our industry. Not so sure I'd want anyone going through my computer though, I'm pretty protective over my data and who gets to see it.
