"I could care less"

It seems that this expression (especially the wrong form of it) is spreading... I hear it more and more often.
Is this a statement on our society in general? That people could say something so contradictory to what they really mean, all the time, and not even realize it?

I know no one here on gfy would ever mix it up but just to recap:
"I could care less" = you actually care about it, and you could still care even less if you had to.
"I couldn't care less" = you do not care about it at all and could not possibly care any less about it.

I was trying to explain this to someone over the weekend and they are so dumb they still weren't able to grasp what I was trying to say.

It's almost as bad as someone saying "would of" instead of "would have" done such and such...

Reminds me of people who say "unthaw" all the time. "I unthawed a few steaks for the barbecue tomorrow"

THAW means thaw. So UNthaw would naturally mean "to freeze".

So what the idiot is really saying is that they froze a few steaks instead of thawed them.

Yet another chapter in case anyone happens to be writing a book titled "people are stupid."

Irregardless is another one.

Then there's the deal where someone asks "Do you mind...." and when you say "No", they think you mean that you do indeed mind.

Nope, sorry... between ATK and having 2 kids now, my time is pretty much filled up.
Which kind of saddens me because I'd like to try my hand at coming up with a new cms actually. But I simply can't spare the time for it.

Which reminds me of negatively asked questions. For example:

"Do you not want to go for dinner?"

I stand there for a second and reply:

"If I say 'yes', does that mean that yes, I do not want to go to dinner... or if I say 'no', does that mean that no, I do not wan to go for dinner?"

They usually hate me at that point but seriously, a negatively asked question results in yes being no and no being no.

I know it's a killer. They mean to say "irrespective of that..".

But you know, I bet at least 90 out of 100 random 5th grade english teachers use the "word".

You are right ... this has annoyed me for a while ... maybe it's a regional / country thing ? I am UK based and the phrase "I couldn't care less" has been a common term forever ... "I could care less" just makes the person saying it sound stupid ...

more annoying phrases that people say and write.

"for all intensive purposes" instead of "for all intents and purposes"

Which shows me they have no clue WTF they are talking about. It's just words you are supposed to say at certain times to them.

LOOSE & LOOSER instead of LOSE and LOSER. You LOSE because your sister's pussy is LOOSE and your mother's is even LOOSER which makes you a LOSER.

NOONE instead of NO ONE. NOONE is the lead signer of the 60's group Herman's Hermits

Coming from a communications background I believe the correct response would be:

"No, I do want to go"

or

"Yes, I don't want to go"

there are definitely easier ways to word it though haha.

Exactly, it's a yes or no question which can not be answered by simply saying yes or no. No matter which you choose, it will require further clarification.

Just thought of another one. "beckon call" instead of "beck and call." It's kind of funny actually, because the real phrase seems rather redundant.

These two, while very true, can be argued by some since, when spoken, could go either way.

"would have" is sometimes spoken quickly and abbreviated to "would've" which ends up sounding like "would of".... but then there are those special people who actually separate them as "would of" and for those people, there is no excuse.

Same can be said of "beck and call"... when said quickly can be more of a "beck'n call". Again, that's not always the case as there are many cases where people really do believe it's "beckon call" and prove it by writing it out.

The English language is unravelling a little more with every generation.

100% correct on all points.

Those are all part of this newage idiotspeak that is slowly overtaking the world.

Prolly is another one. People, the word you are trying to type (yet so miserably failing at) is PROBABLY.
