Internet overhaul wins ICANN's approval.

A complete overhaul of the way in which people navigate the internet
has been given the go-ahead in Paris.

Full story here -
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7475986.stm

Please discuss, how do you think this could or maybe will
effect the industry and other things?

With this system in place the whole .xxx bullshit could start again
and again, as anyone could simply submit it for approval for any
number of different reasons.

To me, this is a very very interesting story because it can mean
any number of huge changes in the way that the internet moves.

Could this get scary?

I think that it will be interesting to see how google and all the SEs refine their ranking algorithms out of this decision. I also see tons more trademark infringement on brands via the ability really of anyone to create say microsoft.office and so forth. It will be rampant. Infringing just went to a whole new level. I don't get involved much in anything because all it does is stress me out, everyone is best just watching your own territory and trying to figure out how to get more of it.

IMHO.

Now here's the interesting part what happens with the registars? I mean if I own .office well that's like .com it's a tld not a domain name. So then do I have the right to sell domain names for me .office tld or at least let registars do it for me?

Really interesting, i can see lots and lots of new tld servers coming online and who could
stop you from reselling your own tld if you have the master server.

Scary to think how it is all going to put together though.

funny funny

Internet safety campaigners support the idea of a .xxx domain name because it makes it easier to track and block pornographic content.

"In the short run I think there are potential problems of confusion," said John Carr, who advises the government on internet safety.

"But in the long term, I think all responsible pornography companies will move their domains into the .xxx area."

Sure go ahead and give up a good .com name that you pay maybe $15 a year for, for a .XXX because the guys owning it will want $60 per domain name. That is after they've saved all the good names for themselves. Sounds like a plan.

what I don't get is are you getting the tld or the tld and a domain. Huge difference between one person owning .xxx that person having to also having to buy all the associated domains. Can one person get porn.xxx and another one get sex.xxx and another get anal.xxx etc etc.

If you own the TLD, then hence you would have control over all domains for the tld
because they really are just subdomains no?

Thats just my theory anyways.

This is a big "OUCH" for us, but Stuart Lawley might be happy and ready to quickly spend 6-figures to apply to "own/admister" the .xxx TLD.

IMO, GatorB's last paragraph of posting #11 above, looks worrisome.

Time for some deep pockets to apply for .kids????????????

At http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=837339 , I posted the following:

I worry that the religious right will pressure gov't to mandate the move of any/all sexual matter sites to .xxx (Stuart Lawley?) or .sex; then, after more political pressure, the gov't will consider mandating the shutdown of all .xxx/.sex traffic.

IMO, maybe owners of present .com sites should all chip in and apply to obtain the .kids domain TLD/Registry -- and, if successful, then launch a nationwide push for all responsible parents to use filters so that their kids can access only .kids domains (and some .com sites that the parents approve for their kids to access!)? We need to show the gov't that it need not censor adult .com access when all that would be needed is for parents to parent (i.e., what Internet access their kids have). At the same time, running the .kids might become a profitable business for the ICANN approved .kids registry????????

Here is the irony of this whole thing. If .xxx is approved even if the government mandates that all adults sites have to go on the .xxx TLD this will only effect US based people which means half the adult sites out there will still be on .coms or .nets.

.xxx is a worrysome situation that is for sure.

Thit is a very important question. if you buy .sex .porn .lesbian .somecooltld
especially for $100,000+ to start, you better be able to controll the whole tld, may be even brand it?

Another question is what will be the most popular root? if you own .ebay what will be your home url? ebay.ebay home.ebay? also if you are ebay, it is your registered trademark so you want to have an exlusive right to all sites withs .ebay tld

However, the cost of setting up a domain - at least initially - will be an expensive business.

"We expect that the fee will be in the low six figure dollar amounts," said Dr Twomey.
i can't buy many with that fucking price tag.

You can count on the big cock of America swinging all around the world on this issue the same it does on any other issue.

It seems the USA pretty much tells everyone else who to trade with, what weapons they can have, how big their military can be before it becomes an issue, what currency to buy oil in, how people bank, where people can gamble, and the list goes on. What makes you think they won't bully everyone else into pushing net porn into the online ghetto?

Wild West Part Deux.
Lots of attornies, lots of money are at stake.
This is all pretty bold and the only winner will be ICANN themselves in processing all the new TLD's in an open source manor.

BIG BIG FUCKING MONEY AT STAKE, HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I estimate in the first 24 hours globally Icann will process more than 1 Billion dollars in TLD releases. The fall out will be even larger as people begin to file lawsuits, trademark disputes and everything else possible in intellectual properties law. So grab your fucken biggest barf bag and get ready for one fucking wild ride.

Why would search engines be effected in anyway because of it? The only people that will get fucked hard from this is the owners of marketable/type-in domains....
