    Australias national day of mourning

Today is declared a national day of mourning for the lives lost in the Bali bombings last weekend.

180 people died in last Saturday's bomb blasts in a popular nightclub area of Bali's Kuta. 103 Australians have been either confirmed dead or are missing.

A minute silence is scheduled for 1200 AEST.

If Al Qaeda keeps this up, they'll turn the muslim world against them. I'm sure the Indonesians aren't exactly dancing in the streets over this.

I doubt it. Muslims openly burn the American flag in the street and chant "death to America".

I think one has to be careful drawing conclusions from crowd scenes. In a country with a population as large as Indonesias (it's the most populous muslim country in the world), you can get a crowd together representing any point of view.

More to the point: What are the major news sources in Indonesia saying? Any editorials saying the explosion was cool? I doubt it.

Intelligent point re sectional politics. If the world media used the same selective lens our media uses re the Moslem world, you'd think the US was run by religious fanatics bent on Christian global hegemony.

No, not in Indonesia's case. Most Indonesian muslims are moderate peaceful people in most parts of the country. The country is very diverse and has old rifs between religous and political fractions. Al Quada is taking advantage of those differences inside the country.

True. Indonesia isn't as extremist as middle eastern countries, but they do have muslim extremists in Indonesia. Abu Sayaff is the Al Quieda of Indonesia. And they do enjoy the occasional American flag burning in Indonesia.

Last time I checked Abu Sayyaf was based in the Philippines. You're correct about the Al Qaeda link though. Their leaders are linked with Al Qaeda b/c some trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The corporate agenda seems, at the moment, more powerful. Just look at the US' policy towards China. If the US was run by Christian zealots we would have a more tense relationship with China. China is very ruthless in repressing Christians

                                      among others...

Instead of tension, we actually have a huge amount of investments with China. US Direct foreign investment is in the billions. China is surpassing Japan as our biggest trade surplus partner. Corporate interests in China dictate a more liberal US approach to China.

In Israel, on the other hand, Christian fundamentalists along with the Israel lobby, keep the US on a definite pro-Israel stance. US foreign policy really is a mishmash of differing sectional groups. If these groups are in accordance, then that policy is pursued [policy re Israel] if they are pitted against each other, the more economically powerful interest prevails [policy re China, Nigeria, etc].
