Vintage WWII warplanes buzzed our house today! [PICS]

In honor of our town's 150th b'day (and the Rose Festival Parade) - we were greeted with an amazing fly-by of the only (airworthy) remaining Lancaster Bomber in the world (stationed in Hamilton, Ont.) - and several vintage escort fighters including a German Messerschmitt and Spitfire.

I grabbed these quick shots from my porch as they did two fly-bys.

Nope, rather a rare sight.

They had the Lanc, two Spitfires, a Hurricane and the Messer. I barely had time to duck into the house to grab the Nikon before they were overhead.

Nice picture, we have a few old war birds that fly around from time to time here in Daytona.. They are always a welcomed site to see. (I'm drooling over that 109)

WWII planes are somehow just beautiful, despite their uses. I find them to be a bit romantic in an eerie sense.

My sentiments exactly. A bittersweet piece of nostalgic history - unfortunately at the cost of many lives of brave and daring men.

Youtube has a video of that same Messerschmidt taking off from its private runway. Search for "Messerschmidt and Fort Erie" and it should come up.

Niagara region, Canada.

The Messerschmidt is owned by a multi-millionaire collector near Fort Erie, Ont. He has several vintage warplanes and his own airport. Years ago he sued Disney over a theme park he designed and was awarded major bucks in the settlement...which he uses to expand his plane collection.

Wow, that's awesome. Imagine how amazing it must feel to fly a piece of history like that...those pilots are as lucky as they get, especially the Messerschmidt's pilot. I'd give anything to fly one of those...

I've heard the four engines on the old Lanc uses up close to $5k in fuel just to make a few fly-bys. And that was a few years back when prices hadn't gone through the roof like today.

A bit like cathedrals ..you might not like why they were built of what happened in them but it is hard not to appreciate the beauty.
