A lot of this has to do with transport costs going up and the lack of food crops due to government incentives to grow ethanol crops

i'd rather be gouged by farmers than oil companies and fucking Arabs - farmers work, Arabs do nothing but cause shit and get away with it because of dumb luck sitting on top of oil.

i can choose to grow some of my own food or shop around for it from small farmers markets.

Farmers incomes have actually been falling in the last couple of years. Maybe the middle man is making more, but the farmer certainly isn't

What's your source? I'd like to see the opposite side of the story.

"American farmers are enjoying record incomes"
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/24/wa...24farm.html?hp

Also, the USDA gives this:
http://www.ers.usda.gov/Features/FarmIncome/
"In 2008, average farm household income is projected to be $89,434, up 6.3 percent from 2007 and 19.2 percent above the 5-year average of 2002-06. Average off-farm income of $75,805 in 2008, up 4.6 percent from 2007, accounts for nearly 85 percent of the average farm operator household's income."

"The nation's farmers, who raise everything from cows to cucumbers, saw their average household income climb about 7 percent last year to more than $83,000. But in grain-rich states, the results were dramatically higher. In Minnesota alone, the median income for crop farmers soared 80 percent to $95,000."

Hell, these days corn is energy for autos too.

Just across the wire (July 9) ... SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Corn futures rose on Monday to a record high for a third consecutive session

Man, popcorn is going to be more than $4.00/gallon soon!

Net cash income is up about 10%

Just like the oil companies. Even though they have higher expenses many agricultural products are selling at 3 to 4 times what they were just a few years ago. An increase that has way more than overcompensated for the higher cost of doing business.

I don't know for sure what the situation in the US is like, but I do know that a European farmer was getting more for a litre of milk 10 years than he is today. The fact the 85% of income for US farmers, comes from off-farm activities would suggest that US farmers have also had to look for alternatives to make a living.

Accusing them of profiteering from the global rise in food prices is a bit unfair. By far the largest cut of the milk that you drink and the fruit and veg that you eat goes to the supermarkets.

Another important point is, farming can be hit and miss. I've seen farmers have a bumper year one year only to see every bit of that profit wiped out the following year. Most industries can plan their projected incomes for a couple of years in advance, but farmers dont have that luxury, bad weather, disease, sickness can totally knock them out for a couple of years.

And farmers aren't selling 3 to 4 times what they were selling before, that's part of the problem. The food volumes on the world market haven't increased that much, but as countries like India and China become wealthier they are buying more food, so there's less to go around.

But an acre of land can still only produce the same amount of crops that it produced 10 years ago.

The US government sets a minimum price that must be paid to farmers for milk. Weird, huh?

It's pretty obvious that the Bilderberg meeting is about fixing world food prices. No doubt the friends of those in high places are making immense profits from higher corn, wheat and
rice. Speaking of Rice, blame Bush! As soon as Bush is outta office your grocery bill will come crashing down.

I dont really care how much profit a farmer makes but I have noticed that groceries are almost double what they cost not too long ago.
