Ok, I am SOO baummed out and sad! My boy Dalmatian (Celsius) has epilepsy and he had a WAY bad seizure this morning. I have spent ALL day cleaning up the aftermath, the entire back end of my apartment was TRASHED and the vet is saying that we are running out of options. The vet increased his meds and says if THAT does not stop the seizures there is ONE more medication they can try and if THAT fails, he has to go to doggy heaven.

Put the poor guy out of his misery. I hate when people try hanging on to their pets for so long when it's clearly past its their time...

Yes, they can be...it is not a "Dalmatian" thing...any animal can epilepsy. He is only 5 years old and Fahrenheit will be HEART-BROKEN! He was doing SO well for a while, it has just been the last month and a half that he has been having problems.

sorry to hear that. I just wish dogs lived as long as humans... it sucks to get so attached and watch them get too old.

Yeh, it did sound pretty harsh. But seriously, is he in pain? Does he know what's going on? I hate watching animals suffer... so I DO have compassion, but for other reasons.

Kayla,

We've got poodles, prone to seizures. Potassium Bromide with Phenobarbitol work pretty good (talk to your vet of course), but doesn't stop them completely, our youngest (who also came down with Addisons Disease, so now even more meds) still has a seizure about every 6 weeks or so. Our very first poodle was on Dilantin (they don't prescribe that anymore) and lived to be almost 17. It can be done, at least with the small dogs, wish I knew about the larger ones.

Good luck and keep trying.

BTW Sly_RJ, seizures don't mean they are past their prime. We don't "put down" people who have seizures.

Don't compare dogs to people, come on. That always cracks me up. People will do anything to save their dog or a neighbors dog, but when it comes to saving or helping out other people, pff. Anyway...

Doesn't sound like it's "just" seizures. From what Kayla said, looks to me like the dog is on its last leg. Excuse me! But I couldn't let my dog sit around in obvious pain. Yeh, I'm an animal hater... hoorah!

Kayla,

I hope everything works out for you. Unfortunately, I have to put my friend of 13 years, Bud, down tomorrow. It's a difficult decision, but after months of treatment for his chronic ear infections, I'm afraid there is little else we can do...

He has had 2 seizures in the last 6 weeks. That is a NEW thing. USUALLY, he goes about 4 months between seizures. Hopefully the new dosage will help.

Putting this in perspective a little bit: I have 3 Dalmatians, Fahrenheit, Celsius and Halon (the chemical inside a fire extinguisher). They mean the world to me. I have based where I go, where I live and what kind of car I buy on what is easiest for the dogs. I collect Dalmatian things, my members ALWAYS send me Dal stuff for my bday. I am all but obsessed with my dogs. I guess that is what happens when you are home almost 24/7, working out of the home.

Sorry to hear about that. We have three huge dogs, one cat and a 3 foot Iquana. Our pets are like our kids, so I know what you're feeling...

based on some of the posts in this thread I can tell some people haven't ever owned a pet...or allowed themselves to get close to one..

Love the names, Kayla.. we have a neighbor with two dalmations named Dot and Ditto.

Anyway... I grew up with two dogs in my family that both had epilepsy. Luckily both were managed with dilantin. One did have to be giving a huge dose of valium (enough to kill a person) by injection to stop an occasional seizure. Neither were as large as a dalmation though. Neither dog passed away or had to be put to sleep because of the seizures and both lived good and happy lives.

If you've not already done this.. please seek out the opinion of another vet.. perhaps see if there's a specialist in your area.
