MMA and boxing are two separate sports and skills.

Hell I would go so far as to say if you put a top MMA fighter in a boxing ring with a mid level boxer using boxing rules the boxer would win most if not all fights.
Toss a top boxer into a MMA match with mid level MMA fighter and the MMA fighter would probably win the majority but not as often as if the above situation is reversed.

Hell I would even say most boxers have more stamina than MMA fighters.

I want to see Pavlik take on Joe Calzaghe now. I'd put my money on Pavlik. Calzaghe is quick but Pavlik is a power machine. Both have tremendous stamina.

"On May 28, 2008 it was reported that Pavlik's next title defense should he beat Lockett would be against undefeated light-heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe, according to his promoter Bob Arum. No deal is finalized as of now." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_Pavlik

this is changing rapidly... the conditioning for mma is getting much better...

btw, you do realize it takes a lot more energy to grapple than to stand up right?

it may seem like the guys in mma get winded quickly, but it has more to do with amount of energy used...

It may be changing and yes grappling takes more energy than stand up. However I see many pure strikers getting winded and that is with much lighter gloves, less power punches thrown, less jabs thrown, and less weight supporting clinches.

do you ever watch WEC? I think overall the guys are in better shape than the UFC.. or maybe they are just hungrier, but most of the fighters have great endurance..

Yup watch most all of it. I actually like MMA better but I still think it is very young and has much more time to mature.

jeff lacey was a power machine and look what calzaghe did to him. pavlik is a similar fighter to kessler and calzghe beat him too. calzaghe has a granite chin, where as pavlik's chin isn't great. pavlik has more power, calzaghe has more skill and speed. i would bet on calzaghe winning on points in a really good fight, hope the fight gets made.

Plavic is a talent. His problem is he is going to have a hard time finding great opponents for him to show his skills off with.

The first fight, the kid from PR is going to be a star.

There are a ton of great boxers out there right now, most of you don't know about them because they only fight on PPV. Regarding Pavlik's fight, there have ALWAYS been tune-ups and suspect mandatory defenses for champions... you can't fight a monster every time out and this fight was a setup for the Calzaghe fight, as Lockett is trained by Joe's father.

The quality of fighters has only increased over the last few decades, it's boxing's exposure to the general public that has declined.

yeah, and he took out a monster in Ponce De Leon too, I was hoping that fight would go some rounds but both of them hit too hard for it to go deep. It was all about who landed the first solid shot.

it seems the science of boxing is alive and well as you see pretty good fights in the lower weight divisions, but yea, boxing needs to step it up.
mma is awesome too but everytime i watch it I can't help but feel it's trying to take on a vince mcmahon type persona while boxing stayed true for over 100 years. I hope mma dont become a real version of the wwe.

Boxing is doing fine in the middleweight and lower divisions. It's the heavyweight division that has been lacking for more than a decade, and that's the division most people care about.

mma is awesome too but everytime i watch it I can't help but feel it's trying to take on a vince mcmahon type persona while boxing stayed true for over 100 years. I hope mma dont become a real version of the wwe.

It depends what org you're watching. EliteXC and Kimbo need gimmicks and personalities to sell their shitty shows whereas the UFC just has great fighters and can put on a show without any need for WWE stunts
