Got this email from a friend's contact. He offered to do a paysite design for me for free. He just needs the work for his portfolio since his only experience has been dotbombs/mainstream sites. Are these kinds of deals even worth it? I figure I'd have to spend a lot of time [after sending him and his team] the content to keep retweaking the site tour and text to a point where they have an event shot at converting in the niches I cover.

Is this worth the time? Should I even bother? I know its free and everything but then again time = money.

I guess after the demise/downsizing of Organic, Scient, USAWeb, iXL and tons of other mainstream design outfits, a lot are turning to porn design. And these are US outfits.... who knows how many overseas outfits are out there as well. Although, the latter's probably easier to discount due to the communications issues, etc.

I'm sure the first draft would not be up to par. But it will definitely take time and lots of feedback to shape it up, that's why they're offering it free this is their first foray into porn.

Since they've done design before for failed dotcoms I'm sure its not a blind start like some guy fumbling with Photoshop. So I think the steaming turd analogy was a bit off the top.

A more mature and rational analogy given the facts would probably be a half baked pie

show to designer

say 'i want a site like this one, with this content provided'

give an email full of the tour text and some direction

not really.... it's a completely different marketing approach in adult. The adult realm barely resembles anything in mainstream. Just because the guy can use photoshop doesn;t mean he knows how to properly construct a successful advertisement. (or "paysite tour", as most know them by).

Just because I have a toolbelt and know how to cut wood doesn't mean I can build a house.

Hmmmm actually its not that easy. The job of the webmaster [that is you] is to come up with a concept for a site that converts. You convey this idea with some "model sites" to the designer and he builds the first draft of the design. You then keep retweaking the design until you THINK it will convert.
Its only as good as its conversion rate---shit may look like the Versailles Palace but if it can't convert then its not really doing its job. This type of process is very time intensive--starting from a composite, reshaping variables, until it works.

I mostly do email marketing and this is the process I do for my promo materials keep running traffic through and tweaking the design/text until conversion goes up.

Its not like I was looking for this deal. I guess if I wanted a design I would hire any one of the fine and experience graphixxx people on this board. There's quite a few. A friend referred them to me to maybe help them out by learning with a "live" project with an adult webmaster. Its all about the learning curve and whether I could help out.

Talking about experience and learning curve: Eveyone has to start from somewhere. So telling me to expect complete shit is not really conducive to anything I don't already know.

i will say this every1 who has sites that look the similar porn template look they all do it 4 a reason it works

go with what works and leave the innovating to ppl with the money 2 burn

You're hilarious. Interesting point re the similar porn template approach. I am not sure if they convert the same as the original. There's just too many variables. But I'm sure Mark T may have an idea regarding this issue, he's one of the premiere conversion analyst/designer out there.

I am not looking for design at the moment, this free design thing fell into my lap and its beginning to look more like I'll be doing THEM the favor. Anyway you look at it, its really training for them.

on the design note i hate 2 say it but i just like smooth designs better oh well so im not a fuckin innovator

but i fully believe u can have one of the top designers on this board make nearly any site and it will convert balls out

everything is relative ur right, but i think its more ur prices and products that will shave your ratios down not specifically the placement of every areola on ur site

I think anyone with half a brain can design successful paysite tours, even webmasters without much photoshop skills, long as they have marketing skills. People are not looking for design skills and cutout perfections when they signup for a site, they only want good pictures. Put some hot pictures up with some text explaining what they can get within and it will sell as well (or better) than the most painstakingly photshopped tour.

Take a look at the top converting sites you know of and you'll see.
