Those two cars looked like they were together, by the way they drove off. They were possibly racing which explains why they drove off... As for people not "helping" the man, they probrably thought he was dead, he just got mamed by a car at high speed's and now hes lying on the floor lifeless. They are hardly gonna walk up and start prodding him.

That's what you get for jaywalking. Parents should show this to their kids and tell them why its important to cross at corners, etc.

But seriously.. I think most people were in shock and couldn't think what to do right away. You can see the one lady on the sidewalk just standing there in complete shock and others just staring in disbelief.

And xentech, he looked over at the SUV and not where he was going.
It looks like the two cars swung around the SUV that was pulling into the spot to get past him and the 2nd one clocked him. I'm betting that 2nd car didn't see him at all.

A lot of what it comes down to, is people not wanting to get involved. Can you really blame them. They have to stand around and wait for the cops to get there, then be interviewed about what they saw, and in the mean time their kid is in daycare, or something. Then they have to worry about being called to testify if they guy sues the driver. Messes up their lives.

Add to that, say you attempt resuscitation and he dies you could be accused of murder, or just roll him over if he's face down and he has serious neck or back injures and becomes a paraplegic and some a-hole lawyer sues you for all you've got and then some.
Its all the fault of the fuckin' lawyers.

I'm sure the fact that 20 people saw him get smashed down by a car would save any worry of murder charges!

Not only that but ... wtf? No.

outside of the hit & run (which im sure as shit happens everywhere, not just america) what were the people supposed to do? your usually instructed to not move someone until the paramedics arrive to avoid causing more injury. not to mention that if your not trained in providing medical care of this type that guy can later sue you for some bullshit only to make ur life hopelessly miserable afterwards.

Wow, the cop got there in under 1 minute. Pretty impressive.

If that happened down here in Brazil someone would chase the car that hit the guy and kick the shit out of him.

He didn't see the car coming, because it was behind the other cars. The 2 cars behind him seemed to be in a hurry and changed to the left stroke, so it's their fault.

Well, I live a few miles away from Hartford, and if this tells you anything, this pic represents a good sampling of the local populace.

It's a fucked up place most people I know try to avoid, if at all possible. Doesn't surprise me. Get offended, but things are what they are.

Life comes before health - that what is taught here in Europe. That means you have to save the persons life even if it means that the person is going to be paralyzed. So the correct way to deal in this situation would have been to stop the accident either by stopping the cars, so they block the road (preferable) or by pulling him into the side - whatever it takes to stop the accident.

These days you try to 'help' someone (CPR, stopping bleeding, etc) and people are either too scared of blood/disease or getting sued b/c their 'help' made the situation worse (cracked rib, person died anyway and family blames the good Samaritan for interfering) ... people are scared of eachother in many cities ... they are more comfortable at keeping their distance and calling 911 and yelling "hey, you ok?" from 10 feet away. It's fucked up but its true.

What they were supposed to do?

Walk towards the guy while calling 911, kneel down, see if he is still responsive, give information about obvious physical injuries to the nice people at 911. If the guy is still responsive, comfort him, let him know an ambulance is on its way, ask about injuries (where does it hurt?), give that information to the people at 911.

While one person does that, one or two others should stand a bit ahead on the road, making sure some careless driver doesn't run him over again.

Seriously - how fucking hard is it to figure out?

It happens often, though, and people are fucking idiots and cowards.

A few years ago, I saw a guy falling down some stairs. Hit the ground pretty badly, bleeding from the head and all. There were lots of people around, but I was the only person who actually called an ambulance and tried to help him.

Just a few weeks ago, I saw some guy lying unconscious in the street. Again, I and some woman in her fifties whom I asked to call for an ambulance were the only ones who did anything.

Fuck, how I despise people

Ah yes, that's true.

Just like people would be afraid to take car of a child lost at the airport because someone could accuse them of being pedos.

But well, that's happening only in America, Europe is much different when it comes to lawsuits etc, although an individualized society is characteristic for most of the modern world nowadays.

In Germany we got a law for that. If you obviously did not help a person in need of serious help and it can be proofed, you will be fined or you can even go to jail for not helping a person in need of help...

I am not a big fan of laws - but this one I like...

Just saw the video for the first time and it looked to me like the guy might have been homeless. I know he was much older (think I read 74 somewhere else) and I don't know many non-homeless senior citizens that would jaywalk across a busy downtown street. Plus it looks to me like he wasn't wearing a shirt. I think that would play a big part in the lack of people helping out, but the media won't mention it if that's the case because it's not as 'shocking' when a drunk bum gets hit by a car and nobody helps him out.

Could you elaborate on this? Did you mean people are more egocentric and less aware of the people around them?

If that is what you meant, then I think its not due to individualism, but due to "group thinking", which makes it alot easier to externalize problems to a group, and not act as an individual. You will see how more and more responsibilities are put on the welfarestate in both the US and Europe, and less and less responsibility on the individual.

I think the world need more individualism, because its the only thing that really reminds us, that we can do and should do a difference in this life/world.

I know the last time I saw an accident happen in front of me I dashed across two lanes of traffic without pause to help the guy. He had gone off the road and through a ditch and up sort of a hillside and the car rolled over on its side. After making sure he wasn't hurt seriously I and my other buddy helped him get loose of the car and across the road to wait for the police and paramedics. I dont think I would hesitate to help if I saw the accident in the video either. Homeless guy or not.
