Got my new pet today.

His name is Sid and he's the cutest little hedgehog in the world. This is a recent picture of him. I was on a waiting list for nearly two years. Hard to find them that are bred properly.

Well, he eats as a baby a special blend of kitty food, and as he gets older, mixes of adult cat food. Also they LOVE chicken, fruit, etc. I paid $150 for him, which is actually really cheap. He's bred in a way to prevent certain disorders that are common amongst wild hedgehogs.

When they get angry or afraid, they huff, REALLY loud. They curl up in such a tight ball you can't even get to their stomach.

Depending on how well you take care of them, average is 3.5~years, but they can be as old as 5

hahaha yeah, the cool thing is they are intelligent animals. The breeder I bought him from trained them basic stuff. They stop huffing when she says stop, so on. Apparently, once they are potty trained, they can run around on the floor with no accidents (unless you stomp and scare them)

Yeah, they are (I've taken care of them before). Mine is quilling right now (losing baby quills), so he is REALLY huffy. When they poke, it doesn't really hurt, just makes you itch a little until you get used to it.

A chick I used to work with bred hedgehogs. When she first told me, I remember thinking how weird that was and wondering how many people would really want them for pets.

But she had people driving in from all over the place to get them. I bet her cell would ring 3 or 4 times a day with people asking her if she had any. They were very cute.

Yeah, yours are generally the european hedghogs, which don't look as cute. They have very bristly hair on their snout and look angry. Domp_NL and I were talking about it yesterday, then ravage his garden.

Hedgehogs are the coolest little cage animal ever.

I havea 4 week old baby in my lap right now and 15 more of them here in my office at this moment. A bit overkill, but my girlfriend is a bit nuts and has her USDA breeders license. As far as I know, she's the only one in NYS at the moment. We had the breeding stock flown in from all over the country.

They're pretty popular and like you said, hard to come by. We have someone who will be paying $300 for one hoglet and is driving 7 hours each way from NJ to pick it up.

Here's one of ours, I think he's called a Algerian Cinnocot:

278138509 - I don't log in all that often.

Feel free to email me and I can pass her info along, though it might be a few days as we just had a baby who wasn't supposed to arrive for another 3 weeks.

Adorable! Are they difficult to train and care for? I thought sugar gliders were cute too but heard they require tons of attention and have very sensitive diets.

Well, this is my first hedgehog that I can call my own, but the breeder says they are easy to train. I just use a storage container (without lid) and fleece to line the bottom. A little igloo home from the pet store and a big wheel.

They're very easy to care for. We use big rubbermade clear storage containers. Each container gets a wheel, food bowls, fleece blankets and a litter pan. We have a few wire cages, but the storage containers are the most commonly used hedgehog "cage".

They're nocturnal. Ours get up each night from around 8pm and play until 2am or so and go back to sleep.

They're very easy to litter train, though I wouldn't recommend letting them have free roam of your place. They'll still manage to shit somewhere they shouldn't be.

Like Sugar Gliders, they are an "exotic" pet. Their diet isn't quite specific, most people feed them cat food and they love meal worms.

My breeder had one that escaped, and she found it on the opposite side of the house trying to poop in the cats litter box

I've got one 6 week old that keeps getting out of a wire cage and I have no clue how. Just came up and found her out and running around again for the third day in a row.
